Checking in with Darby Robertson, Memphis Tattoo Artist

Tattoos have always been on the mind of Darby Robertson, a prominent tattoo artist based in Memphis. From a young age, Darby found herself captivated by tattoos and the artistry behind them. “I was always fascinated by tattoos and heavily tattooed people from an early age,” she recalls. “I spent most of my free time drawing as a kid, and eventually, in my teens, most of my artwork was my attempt at emulating a style of art that I associated with tattooing.”

LEARNING FROM THE MASTERS

This fascination with tattoos led Darby on a journey to pursue her passion professionally. After securing an apprenticeship at Trilogy, she delved deep into the world of tattooing, learning from seasoned artists who had been long established in the craft. “I am forever grateful to have learned from artists that have been in the industry for decades,” she expresses with gratitude.

What excites Darby the most about the Memphis tattoo scene is the city’s love for tattoo flash. “Memphis loves tattoo flash—I have gotten to do so many of my flash designs,” she remarks. “I’m very grateful for the clients that are supportive of my tattoo flash, as well as those that trust me with their custom tattoo designs.”

Darby is eagerly anticipating the upcoming Memphis Tattoo Festival; a weekend-long event where traveling tattooers, as well as local tattooers, gather at the Renasant Convention Center in Memphis to showcase their talent. Darby and the rest of Bluff City Tattoo will have a huge booth at the festival, with many artists offering walk-up availability for same-day appointments. Darby, in particular, will be showcasing her tattoo flash—a book of designs that attendees can flip through to choose their next piece.

Even for those who aren’t planning to get tattooed, the Memphis Tattoo Festival promises to be a fun-filled event. Artists will be selling merchandise like prints and stickers, and attendees can soak in the vibrant atmosphere of creativity and self-expression.
