If you listen to the news, there is always a reason to be down on this city…really any city. But, if you look around, Memphis is made of amazing people with compassion, generosity, and resilience. Memphis has all the necessary ingredients to overcome its past and current issues to thrive in this next decade. The phrase “Grit N Grind” is not limited to our beloved Grizzlies; it describes a city whose best days are ahead, and Race for Reconciliation wants to help ensure that a better future comes into reality.
Created in 2019, Race for Reconciliation (R4R) will host its third annual event on Monday, September 2nd. Race for Reconciliation was created to be both a gift to this city and to stir every Memphian to be a part of moving Memphis forward. The annual 5k or 1-mile walk or run through downtown Memphis is so much more than a race; it is a catalytic event to give Memphians a picture of what could be, what should be, and what the future of our city must be.

No single person or sector of our community can heal Memphis’s past, but together, there is no problem in Memphis that we cannot solve. The beauty of Memphis is that we are big enough that the world hears about it when something happens in Memphis, good or bad. We are also small enough that there are not many degrees of separation among our leaders in business, government, education, healthcare, housing, non-profit, and the faith community. When we dream of a united city, there is no reason Memphis can’t lead the way.
Together, we can unite Memphis.
If you use your time and resources to help others in some way, it is easy to grow weary and wonder if your efforts will ever truly make a difference. R4R is an opportunity to replenish vision and hope and to realize you are not alone in doing good. The opportunity for us to collectively move this city forward happens by each of us impacting our circle of influence and reaching out to build a bridge to other circles of influence.
What you are doing matters.
If you are someone growing weary of the headlines or unsure that there is anything you can do that will make a difference, join the more than 2000 Memphians that will come to the Halloran Centre at the Orpheum, including Mayor Paul Young, the University of Memphis Athletic department, LeMoyne Owen College, and many other organizations and individuals that are a part of helping Memphis believe what is true – together, we can heal our city and see that our diversity is our greatest strength while solving the interconnected pains of poverty and crime.
As a fun, family-friendly event, R4R moves past the critical step of changing the narrative of our city to also using its resources to help close the education gap in this city. Children living in poorer communities are often left without adequate resources to overcome the effects of poverty. Race for Reconciliation donates race proceeds to four local education non-profits in the trenches daily, bringing support and resources to our city’s next generation.
Every Memphian wants a better future for themselves and our city. Come on out and walk or run! Together, we can hit our goal of 2500 participants and create a new narrative as we become the country’s largest walk or run on unity. unity. Go to R4R.one to register.
