Summer LiteracyCorps Member

Summer LiteracyCorps AmeriCorps members seek to increase reading proficiency among targeted groups of children in low-income areas as well as to encourage the participation of parents in order to provide a comprehensive structure of support for the whole family. Research has demonstrated the benefit of quality OST literacy instruction for elementary students. Aligned with our county’s school districts and a network of partners, Literacy Mid-South (LMS) seeks to improve third-grade reading proficiency throughout Shelby County–but especially in the underserved areas of the city of Memphis.

We are recruiting 24 Summer LiteracyCorps AmeriCorps members to support our network of elementary, summer-program providers. The members will be trained in LMS’s K-5 literacy interventions, including interactive read-alouds, small group reads, phonemic awareness, and more. Members will provide ~30 hours of service a week including directly engaging with students, leading instruction, supporting recreational activities, providing direct literacy interventions, conducting literacy assessments, developing programming, engaging families, distributing/building literacy resources, and more.

Schedule:

• Monday – Friday: 10:30am-4:00pm
• 300 hours of service
• There is some flexibility in this schedule, but you must complete all 300 hours to receive full benefits.

• $2,913 stipend divided into bi-weekly pay periods over 10 weeks

Requirements:

• At least 17 years of age; have a high school diploma or GED; and be a U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident alien.
• Documentation of age, education and citizenship are required.
• Social security number is required to complete I-9 and enroll in the AmeriCorps program.
• Complete criminal history checks, including a state & federal fingerprint check and National Sex Offender Public Registry
