Clean Memphis is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating youth, engaging leadership, and empowering communities to sustain a cleaner Memphis. Through our Project Green Fork program, we are working to develop a sustainable food system for all Memphians by reducing food waste, connecting local partners, and socializing green dining practices.
Clean Memphis is seeking a part-time Food Rescue Coordinator to support Project Green Fork’s objectives through creating community partnerships to facilitate the safe, dignified, and appropriate donation of surplus foods. The successful candidate will strengthen the food donation network in Memphis through strategic recruitment, introductions, and relationship management of community partners. With the goal of diverting nutritious, wholesome food to people rather than landfills, the Food Rescue Coordinator will ensure safety procedures are followed, metrics are tracked, and appropriate materials are designed and available.
The Food Rescue Coordinator is a part-time position- approximately 20 hours per week- for a term of 12 months. This position has some flexible hours with both on-site and off-site work.
Job Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities:
- Manage existing relationships among food donors and community partners
- Ensure accurate metrics are captured by community partners and regularly reported to donors
- Assist with troubleshooting as needed
- Facilitate one or two rounds of mini grants to last mile organizations
- Explore additional training opportunities to strengthen last mile organizations
- Develop communication (social media, annual report, and other methods) to highlight effective food rescue in Memphis
- Recruit new surplus food donors and connect them with community partners
- Evaluate barriers to donating surplus food and assist donors in overcoming them
- Determine the best fit community partner based on geography, programming, and cultural appropriateness
- Follow up with partners to ensure a successful relationship is maintained
- Evaluate and implement metrics tracking software application
- Complete self-guided training on application
- Train donors and community partners to use the application
- Communicate with the software developers about challenges
- Collect metrics quarterly or as needed to communicate progress with relevant stakeholders
Additional Responsibilities:
- Assist Clean Memphis team as needed with the following:
- Volunteer and project coordination
- Fundraisers and other special events
- Complete food waste audits
- Represent Clean Memphis at tabling or other community events
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Willingness to advocate for action to support environmental and social gains in the local food system.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and conscientious with record keeping
- Ability to lift 20 pounds if needed to assist with food rescue
- Professional demeanor when representing Clean Memphis to local or national partners
- Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people in a variety of settings, with an emphasis on cultural competency
- Highly flexible and adaptable, able to improvise when circumstances change suddenly and remain composed in stressful situations
- Familiarity with Memphis neighborhoods and history
- Familiarity with environmental issues and sustainability efforts in Memphis
Qualifications & Requirements
- Four-year degree or equivalent
- At least two years’ working experience in a field related to the following: nonprofit organization, food service, or local government
- Ability to pass a background check (required by Shelby County Schools)
- Ability to work outside on occasion
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
Compensation
This is a part-time (approx. 20 hrs. per week), contract position for 12 months with an hourly wage of $25 per hour.
