I have learned so many valuable things over this last year and I could not be more thankful to do it here in Memphis. I would love to share with you three of the most valuable things I have walked away with as I look back on this year.
When you move to a new city, find your people, and find them fast.
Get connected, find a social club, invite a co-worker to dinner, join a church, find a hobby where you can mingle with others, join a gym… whatever your “thing” is, do it and do it with people! I cannot tell you how valuable this was to me. Life provides many highs and many lows. Throughout this last year, I needed my people to celebrate on the mountain and walk in the valleys with me. I can’t imagine living in a new city alone and I am thankful for my community, my “people”, who have been a source of light to me over this last year.

Memphis cares deeply about education and so do I!
I am incredibly passionate about education and Memphis stands on a platform where reform is happening all around us. There are so many things happening here, from incredible teacher prep programs to organizations who invest in schools and holistically serve students and families. The 901 is FULL of people who are dedicated to bringing quality and fair education to all students in Memphis, no matter where you live, how much money you make or what color your skin is. I am so proud to say that I live in a place where education matters.
Memphis is all grit and all grind.
I never really understood that phrase until I started to live and work here. Memphians work hard and don’t give up easily. People rally around important issues in this city and stand for justice. In the face of adversity, Memphians love their neighbors well. No matter what neighborhood I’ve visited there is great work and great pride in these communities.
Even as I wrap up this post, I’m getting teary-eyed thinking about how lucky I am to live here and to see the good this city has to offer. Year One has been such a privilege and I love that I have been challenged to see the good of this city. Every city has its issues and quirks, Memphis has just as many as the next, but there is something very special about this place. There is good work happening here and the privilege of being a part of that work is such an honor. I can’t imagine living any other way.
Thank you for listening to me rant and rave over the last year. From many, many food blogs, MTR, my cute teacher husband, and everything in between, it’s been fun! Thank you for reading my blogs every week and making me feel like a superstar when I see you out and about in our city. I have loved exploring this city with you in mind. Join me in continuing to look for the good in our city. Investing my life into this place brings me a lot of joy.
