Bridge Builders is approaching 40 years of impact, and the organization behind it, BRIDGES USA, has been around for over 100 years. That kind of longevity says something. This isn’t a trendy, short-term initiative; it’s a program that’s been evolving for decades to help young people connect across differences and actually understand each other.
So, who are Bridge Builders?
At its core, Bridge Builders is a leadership program for 7th to 12th-grade students across the greater Memphis area. But it’s not your typical sit-and-listen kind of experience. Instead, students take part in hands-on workshops, honest conversations, and team-based challenges that push them to think differently and listen more closely.
The goal? Help young people build real skills: empathy, communication, and the ability to work with people who don’t look like them, think like them, or come from the same background.
"It’s influenced me to become my best self. All the people I’ve met since my first day are all people who have beautiful personalities and perspectives that make this world what it is, and I love to experience it firsthand."
Why does it hit differently?

Instead of avoiding tough conversations, the program creates space for them.
"It was amazing. I met new people, made friends, and even if I’m not too social, it made me happy and, in a way, helped me communicate better with people I don’t know."
That kind of experience sticks. It’s the kind of learning that doesn’t end when the workshop is over. It shows up later in college, in workplaces, and in communities.
Bridge Builders is more than just a student program
