16 Ways to Serve Memphis This Month

From flexing your green thumb to lending a hand with race day duties, there are many ways to serve Memphis this month!

Serve Memphis this Month: Instill confidence in young girls as a GOTR Coach!

Spring Season Coach Training

  • February 5th from 1PM to 5PM
  • At Girls on the Run Memphis, mentoring young girls to become thriving young women is at the heart of our organization. They provide an after-school program that gives girls a place to belong and find their voice during the challenging years of adolescence.  Meeting in small teams, trained volunteer coaches inspire girls of all abilities to strengthen confidence and other important life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and physical activity. Join their mission by attending a training to become a coach this spring!

Serving with Smiles Volunteer

  • February 9th from 11:30AM to 1PM and 5:30PM to 7PM; repeats weekdays
  • Come assist the Room in the Inn kitchen staff in serving meals to campus guests daily for lunch or dinner! No experience necessary, just a smile and a willingness to serve with hospitality, a cornerstone of RITI’s mission.

Trail Maintenance Mondays

February 13th from 10AM to 2PM

  • Join Pinecrest Camp in the perfect socially-distanced volunteer opportunity. They are smoothing trails, creating new trails, clearing up and restoring old trails, removing invasive plants and restoring wetlands around campus. They can supply some tools, or you bring your own loppers, trimmers, rake, or shovel. This is a great opportunity to spend time in nature and give back.

Feed the Block: weekdays from 1PM to 5PM or 2PM to 7PM

Campus Cleanup: February 16th from 2PM to 5PM

  • Join For the Kingdom as they work to meet community needs in Raleigh. From their daily Feed the Block program which feeds community members to their campus clean up, which ensures their expansive campus stays clean for their events, there is an opportunity for everyone to get involved with their mission and on their campus.

Serve Memphis this Month: Help runners cross the finish line at Shelby Farms Park.

Shelby Farms Park 5k and 15k

  • February 18th from 6:30 am to 7:30 am and 7:40 am to 10:30 am
  • Join Shelby Farms for their Campbell Clinic 5k and 15k taking place on February 18th. Volunteers are needed to assist with packet pickup and at two water stations along the course. This is a great way to earn service hours on an early Saturday morning in the beautiful Shelby Farms Park. 

Saturday Mobile Food Pantry

  • February 18th from 9AM to 11AM
  • Join CCWTN in this fun direct service event that helps those in need in our community! Catholic Charities works outside rain or shine serving boxes of food in a mobile food distribution. Volunteer roles include collecting data, loading food boxes into cars, and directing traffic. Volunteers are crucial to this opportunity to ensure the community can be fed.

Soup Sunday Volunteers

  • Shifts on February 18th and 19th
  • You can become a Soup Sunday volunteer! This is the 34th year that Soup Sunday has served gallons of soup and raised more than a million dollars going toward the Youth Villages Mentoring Program. Volunteers are crucial to this event and to the success of YV. Volunteers are needed for Soup Sunday to assist with set up, check-in, coat check, voting stations or as servers, kitchen staff, food runners and table and parking attendants. There is a way for everyone to support the mission of Youth Villages and to get involved with Soup Sunday to help make it the most successful year yet.

OOTW Volunteer

  • Daily In-Person and Remote Opportunities
  • Out of the Woods Wildlife’s mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release orphaned and injured Tennessee wildlife while inspiring others to co-exist peacefully with wildlife, through education and advocacy. They need volunteers at their two locations, in Millington and Collierville, to help care for their wildlife, assist with maintenance projects, or assist with parts of their operations like social media and photography.

Food Mission Volunteer

  • February 21st through 23rd from 8AM to 11AM
  • Join the St. Vincent de Paul Food Mission as they serve neighbors experiencing hunger every day of the week. Volunteers are needed to help prepare and plate the hot food served. Other tasks, such as unpacking and sorting food products, may be needed to ensure that each visitor receives a quality meal. 

Marketing, Graphic Design, or Development Assistance

  • Ongoing Remote Opportunities
  • Arkwings, a wellness foundation in Frayser centered around holistic living, is looking for assistance in a few areas! Their small team is hoping for help with marketing and communications, graphic design, and/or development. This is a flexible opportunity to practice or hone your skills for a nonprofit that meets a critical community need.

Foster Field Trips

  • Saturdays in February from 12PM to 3PM
  • You can volunteer with MAS from anywhere in Memphis. Help a shelter dog have the best day ever with a foster field trip. MAS will match you with a pup who is ready for a fun-filled adventure. You collect photos, videos, and information from your day to share with the world and help your field trip dog find a forever home. 

Website Support Volunteer

  •  Ongoing In-Person or Remote Opportunity 
  • Volunteer Odyssey is working on a new website! Our current site (volunteerodyssey.com) is in need of some overdue upgrades. If you have experience designing or testing a website, are interested in creating content or gathering pictures, or have experience building out a mobile view, we’d like to pick your brain! Earn service hours doing something you like with Volunteer Odyssey.

Bike Ride Volunteer: Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3PM to 5PM

Community Garden Volunteer: Mondays through Thursdays between 1PM  and 5PM

  • Join the Carpenter Art Garden for their daily community programming. They host their weekly bike rides for the kiddos who come after school and ride their bikes on the nearby greenline. Volunteers are also needed for their community garden, which is sold by their neighborhood interns and used in their cooking classes.

Serve Memphis This Month: Walk alongside young Memphians as a caring mentor

Virtual New Mentor Training Session

  • February 25th from 4PM to 6PM
  • MENTOR Memphis Grizzlies’ Training Institute provides best-in-class training to mentors and mentor programs so that they are equipped to improve student outcomes. This new mentor training starts the process to prepare mentors with the needed tools and skills to mentor and work with the youth within our youth mentoring network. This training is open to anyone interested in becoming a volunteer youth mentor. After completing training, MENTOR Memphis Grizzlies will connect you to a quality youth mentoring program.

Challenger Basketball Program

  • February 27th from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm 
  • Germantown Parks and Rec is looking for volunteers for their challenger basketball program which is for kids 6 to 16 years of age that have intellectual or physical challenges. Volunteers do not need basketball experience and will be there for support and to have fun with the participants! This is a wonderful after-work opportunity to engage with kiddos of all kinds as they practice basketball! 

Playroom Pals

  • February 28th from 9:30 am to 10:30 am

Join Room in the Inn as they shelter those experiencing homelessness in a safe environment. They operate their Family Inn as well as their Recuperative Care Center, both critical community needs. This volunteer event is easy and meaningful. Just come hang out and help watch infants and toddlers in their playroom for an hour! Volunteers should fill out a brief application before their shift. Support the mission of RITI this winter season.
