Volunteer Opportunities: Memphis in May

One of the best times of the year is swiftly approaching… Memphis in May – a time where Memphians and visitors alike can experience music from their favorite artists, take in the smell of award-winning barbeque, and even burn those calories in a run!

Four events make up the Memphis in May International Festival: Beale Street Music Festival, World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest, Celebrate Memphis, and the Great American River Run. Volunteers are essential to making each one of the events successful. I am here to hopefully convince you to experience them from a new perspective.

“Community-based festivals wouldn’t be able to exist without the volunteer efforts and the people behind the scenes who not only help get things ready for the events, but actually produce them,” said Becky Genoways, program specialist.

Everyone has a different way of giving back and getting involved in the community. Memphis in May has volunteers who have worked with them for over 30 years and 96% say they will volunteer again. The volunteers have a hand in people’s lasting impression of Memphis, and BSMF alone brings in people from all 50 states and 11 different countries.

“There are people from all walks of life, whether it’s someone who can use a drill or someone who paints,” said Genoways. Last year, it took 915 volunteers to put on Memphis in May, and I am challenging y’all to exceed that this year.”

If I still haven’t convinced you, here’s some more of my two cents. Volunteers have the opportunity to meet hundreds of new people and possibly find your new best friend…or future spouse if you shoot your shot. They can take advantage of the three “frees:” free parking and shuttles to the events, free t-shirt, and free meals. I mean, everyone loves the word free.
