Volunteer Odyssey: 5 Ways to Serve Your City This Month

They say Memphis is a giant small town. If you live here, you know this to be true. Memphis may be metropolitan, but it has the kind of interconnectedness other cities can only dream of. Sometimes it can feel cramped, but more often, that connection is what us Memphians thrive on. That kinship, where everyone has a tie to someone, has probably landed you an interview, set up that blind date, or scored you last-minute concert tickets, all while wrapping you up in a blanket of southern hospitality. Memphis is a big, small town. Chances are, you know someone who has a hand in every facet of life here—and now, we need you to dig into those connections to help us reach someone who wants to serve our city.

First up:

Make-A-Wish Mid-South has an urgent need for Spanish-speaking volunteers to serve in a variety of ways.  No matter how much free time you have, or where you live, you can help make a child’s wish come true. We encourage you to ask around, spread the word, and think about who you know who might be fluent in Spanish. With your help, we can change lives.

Learn more, and sign up to make dreams come true.

If you aren’t a Spanish speaker, that’s okay! Here are five other ways to get involved this month:

1. Catholic Charities of West TN, Mobile Food Pantry (January 18th from 8:30AM -11:00AM)

CCWTN still needs the help of volunteers every day and they have made many adjustments for COVID-19 to help ensure your safety and the health and safety of those we serve. Volunteers are needed to help us direct traffic and distribute food to our neighbors in need. As a volunteer, you will be working outside under a tent serving boxes of food in a mobile food distribution in our parking lot. Gloves are provided and social distancing is enforced. We ask that volunteers bring their own face covering/mask.

2. Mid-South Food Bank, Food Sorting and Packing Volunteer (January 19th from 10AM-12PM) and (1PM-3PM)

Join the Mid-South Food Bank in their warehouse as you work to sort and pack food products to be distributed to food pantries, food distributions, or quarantined individuals.

3. Memphis Rox, Neighborhood Lunch Program (January 29th from 11AM-2PM)

Join Memphis Rox as they serve the Soulsville community by implementing a free bag lunch program to help distribute food options during the pandemic. They invite one (1) volunteer each day to help assist in the distribution of the bag lunches. Social distancing and face mask requirements are to be strictly enforced.

4. Spay Memphis, Curbside Check-In Volunteer, Daily Openings

Join Spay Memphis as they offer spay and neutering. Volunteers are needed for check in and check out transactions, which now takes place curbside. The check-in volunteer will be responsible for greeting clients as they arrive to drop off their pets. Volunteers will be required to wear a mask (which will be provided unless the volunteer prefers to wear their own) during their time at our clinic. This is a rain-or-shine outdoor volunteer activity.

5. St. Vincent de Paul Care Kits, remote

Build care kits for neighbors experiencing hunger and homelessness who are served daily by the St. Vincent de Paul food mission. For a list of products to donate and drop-off information, email dannon@volunteerodyssey.com.
