Thrifted Looks Are Taking Over the Runway at Tako’s Secondhand’s First-Ever Fashion Show

Who says fashion has to be brand new?

Certainly not Tako’s Secondhand.

On Friday, September 25, the Downtown Memphis secondhand shop is trading its racks for a runway with the first-ever Tako’s Secondhand Fashion Show & Fundraiser Gala — and they’re giving Memphis creatives a pretty fun challenge: take old materials and turn them into something completely new.

Oh, and you’re invited to wear your best secondhand fit while you watch it all happen.

Old Cloths, New looks

The night will spotlight emerging Memphis designers, stylists, and up-cycle artists as they each create new looks out of old materials. That means this isn't just a fashion show. It's a celebration of what can happen when a little creativity meets something that might otherwise be headed for the trash.

The lineup includes designers Nancy Cebrian of Mía Nancé Brand, Sami Reed of Time To Waste Vintage, and Paige Hansen, alongside stylists Ali Bush of Ali Bush Styling, James Waka Flocka Reed of Time To Waste Vintage, and Nick Rowan of Love and Spite Creations.

Up-cycle artists Gabriella Lynne of GL Embroidery and Moxie Macabre of Moxie's Boudoir will also be part of the show.

The runway will be hosted by Khalifa Kofi, with a DJ providing the music throughout the evening. And, because no fashion show is complete without documenting the looks, Jessica Johnson of Visualgum will photograph the runway while Vann Tate captures behind-the-scenes moments and candids.

More Than a Fashion Show

The event is a fundraiser for Tako’s Secondhand, with proceeds helping the shop work toward establishing a permanent brick-and-mortar location. A portion of the proceeds will also go to local organizations that support and protect Memphis' LGBTQ+ community.

Tako's is asking guests to keep local thrift and vintage stores in mind when searching for their gala look. So if you've been waiting for an excuse to finally wear that wild vintage jacket, the outfit that's been sitting untouched in your closet, or the thrift-store find you bought because you knew you'd eventually find somewhere to wear it — this is your moment.

Finally, an Excuse to Wear That Outfit

The folks at Tako's put it best:

“Finally—an excuse to wear that outfit!”

And honestly, Memphis could use more excuses like this. The evening brings together fashion, sustainability, local artists, music and community — all while supporting a small Memphis business and organizations doing work in the LGBTQ+ community.
