The Pulse of the District: How Strangewaze Became the Symbol of the Edge’s Revitalization

In the heart of Memphis, where Downtown meets Midtown, there is a neighborhood that has spent the last decade proving what’s possible when a community commits to growth. On May 20, that transformation takes center stage.

Strangewaze is back for one night only. While it coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Memphis Medical District Collaborative (MMDC), the festival’s roots are deeply grassroots. Originally conceptualized by Emily Todd, along with her father, Mike Todd, with the collaboration and support of dedicated Edge District stakeholders, Strangewaze was born from a vision of a connected, vibrant neighborhood. Today, MMDC is proud to continue that collaboration and carry the torch for this beloved tradition, ensuring its growth remains a symbol of the District’s lasting commitment to revitalization.

At the Center of It All

The setting for this celebration is the Medical District Park—a green space sitting at the crossroads of the city’s life-saving work and its newest residential hubs. The festival is just steps away from UTHSC and Regional One Health, and a short walk for the residents of Orleans Station and the surrounding area. It is a true community backyard party for the healthcare professionals, students, and neighbors defining the new energy of the Edge.

Defining the City’s Culture

This isn’t just a festival; it’s a curated showcase of the creatives and entrepreneurs defining the modern Memphis aesthetic.

  • The SOUL Lounge: We Are Memphis is bringing this new activation to the park, offering a curated space to soak in the local vibes and celebrate the “Soul” that makes the District unique.
  • The Marketplace: Shop the vintage vinyl from Shangri-La, and the 901 Deals Sneaker Pop-up, highlighting the small businesses fueling the city’s creative economy.
  • The Atmosphere: High-energy sets from Cat Daddy, Iron Mic Coalition, and DJ AD, alongside the legendary Jookin’ Wars, ensure the energy matches the neighborhood’s momentum.

A Taste of the Momentum

The revitalization of the Edge is best experienced through its flavors. This year’s lineup features a powerhouse of local favorites, including Chai Halal Bowls, Sabor Caribe, Good Groceries Mobile Diner, and Medical District newcomer Playa Bowls

In a new nod to the District’s growth, Old Dominick Distillery is offering free samples to the 21+ crowd. For those who want to celebrate the neighborhood’s future, they are also featuring a special tasting flight—a toast to those who continue to invest in the momentum of the Medical District.

A Commitment to Community

At its core, Strangewaze remains a gift to the people. It stands as the only free community event in the park during the Memphis in May season.

  • Arrive Early: Free food tickets and Strangewaze cups are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Once those are snapped up, our curated vendors will continue serving paid options.
  • Everyone is Invited: From axe throwing with Axe N’ Chill to kids’ activities with Memphis Moms, the event is designed for every Memphian.

Strangewaze isn’t just a party—it’s a testament to a decade of collaboration. It proves that when we invest in a place, the culture doesn’t just survive; it thrives.
