The Forest is Calling: Why 60 Memphians are Unplugging for a “Sacred Nature Weekend” This May 15-17, 2026

In a world that feels increasingly digital, loud, and disconnected, a quiet revolution is happening just 20 minutes from Midtown. While most of the city is tethered to glowing screens and relentless notifications, a small group of 60 individuals is preparing to trade their Wi-Fi for wild-foraged chanterelles and their ringtones for the crackle of a ceremonial bonfire.

If you feel like your spirit has been running on empty, consider this your invitation to hit the ‘Restart’ button. Sacred Nature Weekend is a whimsical sanctuary for the weary; it is a portal where the ‘real world’ problems of the city dissolve into the ancient, steady rhythm of the forest. This is your time to shed the weight of the world, trade your anxieties for a UV flashlight, and remember that even in a chaotic year, you are still allowed to bloom. It is a curated, soul-centered retreat designed to prove that in the heart of the Mid-South, you don’t have to travel far to find a different world—you just have to know how to look for it.

Permission to Be: A New Kind of Adventure

The philosophy behind Sacred Nature Weekend is simple but radical:

You are allowed.

In a society obsessed with productivity, the organizers—led by founder Jessica Shea and the Memphis Mushroom Festival team—have created a space where “being” is the only requirement. The weekend is intentionally limited to just 60 participants. This intimacy ensures that the “You Can Sit With Us” mission isn’t just a slogan—it’s a reality. Whether you arrive with a group of friends or show up solo with a backpack and an open heart, the weekend is designed to foster deep, immediate community.

Seeing the Invisible: The Blacklight & The Blade

What sets this weekend apart from a standard state park weekend is the educational and sensory depth of the programming. The itinerary is a blend of scientific wonder and ancestral wisdom.

One of the most anticipated events is the Blacklight Night Hike. Armed with UV flashlights provided by the festival, participants will venture into the dark to witness a hidden “neon” world. Many species of fungi, lichens, and even insects possess biofluorescent properties that are invisible to the naked eye but glow in brilliant purples and greens under ultraviolet light. It is a powerful metaphor for the weekend itself: there is magic all around us, provided we have the right light to see it.

During the day, the focus shifts to nourishment. Guided by expert foragers, guests will wander off the beaten path to learn the “language of the woods.” This isn’t just about identification; it’s about connection. The weekend culminates in the Wild Foods Dinner, a community feast where the menu is as wild as the setting, featuring ingredients foraged directly from the earth.

Breaking the Barrier: The First-Timer Scholarship

The organizers recognize that for many, the outdoors can feel intimidating. The cost of gear, the lack of “know-how,” and the fear of the unknown often keep people from experiencing the healing power of nature.

To bridge this gap, Sacred Nature Weekend is offering five full scholarships specifically for first-time campers. These seekers—people who have never slept in a tent overnight—will be provided with the gear and the mentorship they need to feel safe and welcomed. Additionally, all ticket holders are entered into a raffle for a chance to win a Beginner Camping Starter Set, featuring a high-quality tent and chairs, ensuring the adventure continues long after the weekend ends.

The Sacred Rhythm: Music, Art, and Fire

The weekend isn’t just about learning; it’s about release. Saturday night features a Bonfire Release Ceremony, a rhythmic and soulful gathering around the flames. Participants are invited to let go of the digital noise and personal burdens that no longer serve them, releasing them into the smoke of the ancestors.

Combined with nature painting sessions (where supplies are provided and “imperfection” is encouraged) and community stretching, the schedule strikes a delicate balance between activity and rest.

An Invitation to the Mid-South

As the Memphis Mushroom Festival continues to grow, Sacred Nature Weekend stands as its most intimate and transformative offering yet. It is a call to the adventure-seekers, the burnt-out professionals, the creative souls, and the curious beginners.

“Nature isn’t something you visit,” says the team. “It’s something you are part of. We’re just providing the campsite, the community, and the UV light to help you remember that.”

For those ready to unplug and find their glow, the forest is waiting. Will you answer?
