We already know Memphis and Shelby County are filled with trailblazers, innovators, and change-makers, but this summer, the spotlight turned to a new group of game-changers: our young people!
On June 26, Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris and his team hosted the inaugural Rising Star Awards, a first-of-its-kind celebration honoring outstanding youth ages 10 to 24 who are making a real impact on our community. Held at the stunning Collage Dance Center, this inspiring luncheon was a powerful reminder that you don’t have to wait until adulthood to be excellent.
In a city that knows how to rally behind its people, these 14 Rising Stars were the heartbeat of the room, and the applause they received was well-earned.
From Quiet Leaders to Loud Achievers
After years of honoring adults with awards, Mayor Harris decided it was time to shift the lens toward the next generation of changemakers. The Rising Star Awards spotlight youth who show:
Leadership in their schools or neighborhoods
Academic excellence against the odds
Courage through adversity
Creative passion with a purpose
“These kids don’t always get the recognition they deserve. But they are doing incredible things. Our Rising Stars are authors, entrepreneurs, scholars, advocates, and dreamers. We created this moment to say: We see you. We believe in you. And we're so proud.”

🛫 A pilot in training who is preparing for takeoff both literally and metaphorically.
📚 A young author and autism advocate who’s using her voice to raise awareness and uplift others.
