Motherhood and a serious sweet tooth led event planner and entrepreneur, Chelsea Glass of Ion Consulting, LLC., to launch Memphis’ first-ever dessert festival.
After becoming pregnant with her now seven-month-old son, Glass had to cut out dairy from her diet. For this self-proclaimed dessert connoisseur that totally turned her world upside down.
“[Dairy] is a huge component of everything dessert, everything sweet,” Glass said. “So, it kind of became this personal challenge, almost like a game or a mission to call around and see who carried dairy-free items. It was like a crash course introduction to the different bakeries around the city.”
Glass took that knowledge and her more than 10 years of experience in event planning to create the Delectable Fest, a luxurious event experience featuring over 30 dessert samples, paired cocktails, coffee, and a milk bar.
“We’ll have everything from cinnamon rolls to Phillip Ashley chocolates to avocado brownies. We’re really trying to touch the whole spectrum of everything dessert. Everybody is super excited to share multiple items for their selection,” said Glass.
Guests will also be able to enjoy live music, luxury gift shopping and Beale Street Landing’s gorgeous view of the Mississippi River. The event kicks off on Sunday, December 1st from 6-8 pm.
Notable restaurateurs and chefs will be on board like Maciel’s, Lucy J’s Bakery, Rizzo’s, Guilt Free Pastries and Phillip Ashley Chocolates. And for those who want a full meal before dessert, dinner can be purchased from Cousins Maine Lobster.
“Our food community in Memphis is huge. On this journey to find and discover places that are food-friendly for dietary restrictions, I really gained a new love and respect for the dessert and pastry community. We have so many amazing chefs in this city — folks who have trained in France — and I don’t believe they’ve received the accolades they deserve,” Glass said.
The mompreneur also wants to build community and buzz around Memphis’ growing pastry scene through her social media group, the Memphis Dessert Directory. She hopes the directory and Delectable Fest will highlight all of the sweet things Memphis has to offer.
“That’s really what I want to do with this event is to build community,” said Glass. “I want to showcase local restaurants, local chefs and everything that makes Memphis so special.”
