Summer Service Continues! How will you make a difference in Memphis this month?
Summer is your time to have more time; the extra daylight might lead to having more drive to get even more accomplished.
From tech to music to Memphis education, the following summer service opportunities will allow you to foster a fruitful future for your city.
8 summer service opportunities in Memphis:
The Urban Farm at New Hope Christian Academy is not only an educational playground that produces opportunities for hands-on learning. It’s an active incubator of fruitful resources for the Frayser community.
This edible school yard has a three fold purpose—to inspire, educate, and foster creativity while cultivating and reconnecting to Earth.
And while the New Hope garden is a picture of efficiency, planting, watering, and cultivation comes at a cost.
Since 1987, many young Memphians have found a safe haven in Street Ministries—be it a place study, or steward friendships.
Among the many ways the local nonprofit engages with its students—outside of mentorship, providing access to athletics and literacy support—Streets hosts monthly Block Parties to present fun-filled nights for students staff and volunteers.
Each Block Party costs $150 to cover food, game supplies and more—and they are ramping up for the fall season.
As local teachers prepare to take on the 2023-24 school year, you might be wondering how you can play a part in empowering their efforts to embolden and equip young minds in Memphis.
Memphis Teacher Residency has been training and empowering effective education professionals since 2009—and with your help, students across the city will receive the love, patience, and advanced academic instruction they deserve.
Through lessons of self-love and athletic training, Girls on the Run leads young women to victory— and you could be the secret weapon they need to secure wins on and off the track.
As a coach, you’ll not only create opportunities for young Memphians to unlock hidden levels of strength, but you’ll also be the bestie these girls need during a new season of self-discovery.
- August 9th (4:30PM- 8:30PM)
WYXR 91.7 FM‘s Stereo Sessions, presented by MEMPHO, are monthly hi-fi album listening parties that explore Memphis music that fans may have missed. For the 6th and final Stereo Session of 2023, music-lovers are invited to dive into Bettye Crutcher’s 1974 release, “Long As You Love Me (I’ll Be Alright)”. Volunteers are needed to help with set up, break down, and sign in.
- Applications open for 2023-2024 school year
It takes a village to see to the success of local youth—and the boys of Grizzlies Prep Charter School are looking for Memphians who want to build life-long connections through mentorships that will lead to fruitful opportunities.
- Donations will be matched up to $25,000
Since 2000, Stax Music Academy has been stewarding the talents of Memphis’ youngest musicians through professional workshops, after-school programming, and more at little to no cost thanks to financial assistance. With donations received through the #MusicMustContinue Campaign, SMA is able to offer deeply discounted tuition to families of young folks who are interested in enhancing their performance skills.
- Mock Interviews: August 11th & 25th
Since May 2015, CodeCrew has taught 2,000+ students to code through summer camps, after school programs, in-school electives, and special events—and with your help, they’ll be ready to rock any interview they enter.
