As our beloved Brooks Museum gets ready to relocate downtown in 2024 and the Memphis College of Art prepares to close for good come summer of 2020, we all have questions as to what will come of those spaces once left vacant- and your idea could be the answer.
In hopes of reimagining the MCA and Brooks spaces, the City of Memphis has launched Create Your Space, a call for ideas to help preserve and reinvent the life of these iconic Overton Park spaces. No idea is too big, small, or weird, and EpiCenter is making themselves available to provide you with feedback and advice for the entire month of April starting with their information workshop on April 17th.
- When: Wednesday, April 17 (5PM-7PM)
- Where: Memphis College of Art (1930 Poplar Ave.)
“Memphis is working towards being more inclusive and different, so this initiative is meant to get more community input and ideas rather than leaning on what could be traditionally found,” said Whitney Hardy, Director of Entrepreneurial Programs at EpiCenter Memphis. “While we aren’t involved in the selection portion, we want to help make sure that the people, businesses, and organizations who are preparing to go up against the judge are fully equipped to do so.”
Propose an idea for one or both buildings, and do it solo, with your organization, or a team- Either way, you’re encouraged to submit your proposal by 5PM on Tuesday, April 30th. The strongest submissions, ones that “enhance the surrounding park, encourage connections, are financially sustainable, and are accessible and welcoming to all Memphians, will be chosen by a select committee to forward with a call for its creators to expand on their ideas as part of a request for proposals (RFP) process.
“Right now, Memphis is a place for new beginnings,” Hardy said. “It’s not always easy, but it’s definitely doable and I’m hoping people use this opportunity and whatever opportunities follow to live their dreams out, no matter how big or small.”
