Storm Knocked Out Your Power? Here Is Where to Find Food in Memphis This Week

A few days without electricity empties a refrigerator fast. For a lot of Memphis families, this week’s storms and outages did not just mean a dark house. They meant a week of groceries gone at once, with no easy way to replace it.

Mid-South Food Bank and its partner agencies have pantries, soup kitchens, and mobile distributions running across Shelby County seven days a week. Here is where to go this week, and here is how the rest of us can pitch in.

Where to Find Food This Week

Call ahead before you go. Some sites serve specific ZIP codes or ask for proof of address, and hours can shift during an outage.

Wednesday, August 26

Donate Funds

Dollars are the most useful thing you can send. They let the food bank buy exactly what is short and move it out the door immediately, instead of waiting on whatever happens to come through the donation door. You can donate to supply our neighbors at: midsouthfoodbank.org/donate

Donate Food

With power still out in parts of the county, ready-to-eat and shelf-stable items are what people actually need right now:

  • Peanut butter and crackers
  • Canned meat and canned meals with pop-top lids
  • Protein and granola bars
  • Shelf-stable milk and individual cereal
  • Fruit cups, applesauce, dried fruit, and nuts
  • Beef or turkey jerky, cheese and cracker packs, individual snack packs
  • Bottled water and electrolyte drinks
  • Shelf-stable meal kits that need no heating
  • Disposable utensils, napkins, and manual can openers

  • Cumberland Presbyterian (8207 Traditional Pl. 38016): Mon to Thu, 8AM to 5PM, and Fri 8AM to 12PM
  • Beth Shalom Synagogue (6775 Humphreys Blvd. 38120): Tue to Fri, 8AM to 4PM
  • Eyewear Gallery (428 Perkins Ext. 38117): Mon to Thu, 9AM to 5PM, and Sat 9AM to 3:30PM
  • Vitalant: multiple locations, times vary

Volunteer

All of that donated food has to be sorted before it can go anywhere. Volunteer shifts are open at the Mid-South Food Bank warehouse at 3865 S. Perkins. Sign-up for your shift at midsouthfoodbank.org/ways-to-give-volunteer.
