So You Want to Volunteer With Indie Memphis Film Festival?

When it comes to searching for volunteer opportunities, we know that there are some less than lively listings out there—but we know of one coming up soon that might just knock your socks off. The Indie Memphis Film Festival is right around the corner and I can give you a few reasons that it might win you over.

But before we get into that, here’s a little overview for those of you who haven’t heard of it:

Indie Memphis is a local organization that supports independent filmmakers both local and national. From weekly screenings and workshops to their work with young filmmakers and the Black Creators Forum, they go above and beyond to create spaces for creativity, guidance, and support in the film industry. Entering its 22nd year, the film festival serves as an opportunity “to celebrate the cultivation of independent features, documentaries, and short films for filmmakers, musicians, artists, and audiences from all over the country.”

Now that you have an idea of who you may be volunteering for, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty—the who, what, when, where, why and how.

Who can volunteer? You. Yes, you! Are you 18 or older? If so, that’s perfect! Now that doesn’t mean that high school students are excluded from this equation, but the festival will interfere with school hours at times and it ends late most night—but who needs sleep, amiright?

What should a volunteer expect? To be moving and shaking all day everyday. Showings start as early as 10 am and as late as midnight! Volunteer positions may include ticket scanners or ballot counters. It all varies depending on the day and the venue. You’ll be on your feet, so comfy shoes are a must—and you might be doing some heavy lifting, so maybe get some practice reps in at the gym if you can.

When is the festival? The festivities kick off with an opening reception on Wednesday, October 30th and all the film frenzy doesn’t end until Monday, November 4th.

Where does the festival take place? There will be five venues this year: Playhouse on the Square, Theatre Works, Ballet Memphis, Studio on the Square, and Hattiloo.

Why should I volunteer? Is there something in it for me? Boy, is there! If you’re in need of volunteer hours then you are looking at the right spot! You can volunteer as little as five hours to 20+. Plus you get a free crew t-shirt! I don’t know about you, but I enjoy event t-shirts. I like showing off what I have been a part of. You also get film tickets, festival passes, or VIP passes depending on how many hours you rack up. Oh, and they’re throwing a party just for the volunteers once everything is said and done.

Plus plus, you get to mix and mingle with first time volunteers and those who’ve been in the game for a while—shoutout to David and Cindy Hymel who are always at every event and screening throughout the year *applause*

How do I sign up? So you want to be a part of the team? We knew you would! Indie Memphis has a volunteer tab on its website, where you can fill out a form. Don’t stress about what your position will consist of because volunteer training will be available. There will be two sessions held at Playhouse on the Square for you to learn the ropes: Saturday, Oct. 19 at 11 AM and Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 6:30PM.

Ready to be part of the volunteer crew? Go ahead and sign-up here. There will be an email on the form if you have any questions or concerns.

While you’re on your phone, laptop or tablet, make sure to follow Indie Memphis on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to see what else you have to look forward to!
