She Didn’t Know She Was a Leader Yet

On her first day at Girls Inc. of Memphis, she stayed quiet. She watched more than she spoke. She kept her ideas to herself. When asked a question, she looked down, unsure if her answer was “right.” That story is not uncommon.

In fact, one Girls Inc. participant shared, “Before Girls Inc., I was very quiet and didn’t want to talk to anyone. Girls Inc. brought out a side of me I never knew I had.”

Fast forward a few months, and that same girl is standing in front of a group, confidently explaining how her team solved a problem. She is asking questions. She is encouraging others. She is leading.

This is what transformation looks like. And it is happening every day in Memphis.

More Than a Program. A Place to Grow

At Girls Inc. of Memphis, girls are not just learning skills. They are discovering who they are. For many, it is the first time they feel fully seen and supported. The first time someone tells them their voice matters. The first time they realize they are capable of more than they imagined.

As Saniya put it, “It’s a place where I can totally be myself without worrying about being judged.”

That kind of environment changes everything. Because when a girl believes in herself, she starts to show up differently. At school. At home. In her community.

STEM That Feels Possible

STEM can feel intimidating. It can feel like something meant for someone else. But at Girls Inc., girls are introduced to STEM in a way that feels approachable and exciting.

They are not just reading about concepts. They are building, experimenting, and solving real problems together.

Sharayli shared, “I was able to code my own robot, and it left me feeling accomplished.”

And something shifts. A girl who once thought, “I am not good at this,” begins to say, “Let me try.” Then eventually, “I can do this.” And that confidence does not stay in the classroom. It follows her into every part of her life.

Learning to Lead Before the World Asks Them To

Leadership does not start with a title. It starts with small moments.

It looks like raising your hand when you are unsure.

It looks like helping a teammate who is struggling.

It looks like speaking up when something does not feel right.

At Girls Inc., girls practice these moments every day. Over time, those small moments turn into something bigger. As one girl reflected, “That nervous, anxious five-year-old is now a leader who believes she can change the world.”

They begin to understand that leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room. It is about having the courage to use your voice at all.

A Community That Stays With Them

What makes Girls Inc. special is not just what girls learn. It is how they feel while learning it. They are surrounded by mentors who show up consistently. By peers who encourage them. By a community that celebrates their growth.

Moments of encouragement can change everything. Jakara remembered stepping onto a stage for the first time and shared, “When I heard the cheering, I felt like I really belonged.”

That kind of support creates confidence that lasts. And for many girls, it becomes a foundation they carry with them for years to come.

Why This Matters for Memphis

The future of Memphis is already being shaped by the young people growing up here. When girls are given the tools to succeed, they do more than change their own lives. They impact their families, their neighborhoods, and their city. They become the innovators, the educators, the leaders, and the problem-solvers Memphis needs.

Investing in girls is not just the right thing to do. It is essential to the future of our community.

How You Can Be Part of Her Story

Every girl’s journey looks different. But none of them happen alone. You can be part of that story. You can mentor. You can volunteer. You can support programs that create space for girls to grow and lead. You can share their stories so more people understand the impact happening right here in Memphis.

Because when a girl finds her voice, it changes more than her life. It changes what is possible for all of us.

And She Is Just Getting Started

That girl who once stayed quiet is not the only one. There are hundreds more, each with their own story, their own potential, and their own future waiting to unfold.

For 80 years, Girls Inc. of Memphis has been a place where those stories begin to change. A place where girls find their voice, build their confidence, and step into who they are meant to be.

Generation after generation, the impact has continued. And today, that legacy is still growing. Still reaching more girls. Still shaping the future of Memphis in ways we can see and in ways we are only beginning to understand.

Because when a girl discovers her strength, it does not stop with her. It carries forward. And she is just getting started.
