ShapeShifter Art School and Gallery: A Radical Approach to Teaching, Learning, and Sharing Art

Memphis is home to a wealth of creativity, from musical artists to chefs and everything in between.

ShapeShifter is Memphis’s newest art school and gallery, open to anyone interested in enriching their art knowledge and skills. Our classes and workshops started in January with the Winter Session. All of our offerings are open to anyone 18 and older regardless of their previous experience.

Teaching at ShapeShifter in the first Session has shown me that students and teachers coming together from a place of curiosity and generosity create a dynamic learning environment that is both peaceful and fruitful. I am coming to them not as an expert, but as someone with experience and a drive to share. I’m open about what works for me, times that I’ve been unsuccessful, and other people’s work that shows techniques better than mine does.

Students, in turn, have shown a willingness to be vulnerable and share their work along with questions and concerns. The result is a gentle, generous sharing of ideas and curiosity, which creates more discussion, more ideas, and more curiosity.

We’re basically a perpetual curiosity machine, and we invite others to experience it.

Our Spring Session is open for registration, and our galleries have been transformed for the opening of two shows on March 6. Sharon Havelka’s Familial Objects and Eva Langson’s a path integral are two distinct visions that demonstrate our vibrant art culture. These shows run through April 18.

We hope you’ll join us and be a part of this space and community dedicated to creativity through lifelong learning.

ShapeShifter Art School and Gallery is located at 680 Oakleaf Office Lane.

The gallery is open Thursday through Saturday 12-5pm and by appointment on Tuesday and Wednesday.
