Volunteers Needed During COVID-19!

Memphis needs you more now than ever! Here are some ways you can care for our community while keeping yourself safe:

1.) Feed families

  • Neighborhood Christian Centers: Homebound Delivery Service, Monday through Friday

NCC has launched a new homebound delivery service for veterans, high-risk individuals, and the elderly in our community. They are in need of volunteers to pack boxes of staple items or drivers to deliver the boxes to these individuals’ doorstep.

  • Catholic Charities of West TN: Mobile Food Pantry: Every Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday from 8:30am to 12:00pm  

The work of Catholic Charities meets a critical need as they continue to provide meals for those in need out of their Mobile Food Pantry in the parking lot at 1325 Jefferson Ave. Volunteers are needed to direct traffic and to distribute the food boxes as needed. Gloves will be provided to all, and a face mask will be provided to the volunteers tasked with questioning clients as they pull up in their cars.

  • Hospitality Hub: Meal Drop-offs: Monday through Friday

First Presbyterian Church & Hospitality HUB will continue to serve vulnerable populations in need of food during the COVID-19 outbreak. However, they are in need of packaged lunches which consist of a sandwich (no condiments), chips or fruit, non-caffeinated drink or bottled water, and a candy bar or granola bar.

  • Green Dot Public Schools: Feed our Families

Volunteers are needed to sort and package food when it arrives from the Mid-South Food Bank, and to distribute meals to families using a drive through system. Multiple times and locations available. Personal protective equipment is provided.

2.) Foster a pet (this might be a help to YOU during this season!)

  • Memphis Animal Services: Foster a dog

No matter what length of commitment you’re looking for, we can find a a furry friend for you. MAS provides supplies such as food, kennels, etc., as supplies are available, in addition to taking care of all basic medical care for foster pets, and care beyond the basics as resources allow.

  • Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County: Foster a dog or cat 

Need a COVID-19 companion? The Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County would love to give you an adult dog or cat to keep you company for two weeks or longer. Basic needs like food, crates, leash, collar, and medication are provided. Did we mention that fostering also counts as volunteer hours (talking to you college students!) 3.) Spread Hope (we all need a little, so let’s give ALOT!!!)

  • Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital: Send a Message of Hope 

You can bring a smile to patients and families Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital by recording a video message that will be played on their hospital television station!

  • Make Masks for Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels needs masks to protect their high-risk seniors, and this tutorial can help you get started! When you have masks ready to donate, email Candice to arrange a time to drop them off.

  • Spreading Sunshine: Send Sunshine

Use your creativity to help create hand made cards for children impacted by childhood illness or special needs. These cards will be included in Sunshine Boxes for children in Memphis and across the United States.

4.) Go on a “Bear Hunt” (Cause…Grizzlies, you know!?)

  • Bear Hunt: 

Place a teddy bear in your window to brighten someone’s day! Inspired by the children’s book, “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt,” people around the U.S. and here in Shelby County are spreading hope by placing teddy bears in their windows. Residents are encouraged to drive or walk around, and count the bears they see peeking out the window.
