Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth With Gluten-Free and Vegan Desserts

Vegans and those who are gluten-free like sweets, too. Luckily, there are a handful of places in the Bluff City that offer a variety of desserts to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Memphis isn’t just full of BBQ eateries. The Bluff City is also home to some pretty sought after dessert shops. From staples like Muddy’s Bake Shop to newer pastry boutiques like Berkshire17, it’s not too hard to find a place to satisfy your sweet tooth; but is all lost for those of us who live a gluten-free and/or vegan lifestyle? While there isn’t a surplus of restaurants and bakeries catering to these dietary restrictions, there are a few sprinkled throughout the city.

Imagine Cafe (V), 2158 Young Avenue, Memphis, TN 38104

Catering to those who live a vegan lifestyle, Imagine Cafe may be known for its lunch and dinner options, but also offers a small but eclectic mix of desserts. From shakes and ice cream to brownies and cupcakes, there is something for all vegans.

While this restaurant doesn’t have tons of options when it comes to the types of desserts sold, they aren’t lacking in variety when it comes to the flavors of gluten-free and vegan ice cream. There is even a strawberry lemonade sorbet on the menu.

Muddy’s is a local cupcake shop that gets it. For years the shop has been known for its large variety of cupcakes; but recently they created and have been expanding their vegan menu, offering lots of sweet options. Peanut butter chocolate bars, cookies and cream cupcakes, and chocolate chip crunch cookies are just some of the items on the menu. There is even an option to build your own vegan cupcake. Most of the desserts have to be preordered, but they offer at least two vegan options in store daily.

Gigi’s Cupcakes USA

Gigi’s offers a variety of delicious cupcakes that are gluten-free. Cupcake flavors include their popular wedding cake, strawberry and cream, and triple chocolate torte. While most of the options have to be pre-ordered, there is usually at least one gluten-free option in store every day.

The Pink Bakery, Inc.

The Pink Bakery (GF, V), 454 W. Poplar Avenue, Collierville, TN 38107 (Thursdays only) + Delivery Options

The Pink Bakery is like a dessert heaven for those with food sensitivities and dietary restrictions. According to their website, they are the first bakery in Tennessee that makes its desserts free of all eight major allergens. Cakes, brownies, cookies, and even doughnuts are on their large menu of sweet treats. The Pink Bakery doesn’t have a store, but sets up shop every Thursday at the Collierville Farmers Market from 8 am to 1 pm.

Guilt Free Pastries (V, GF), Delivery Options

Guilt Free Pastries is known as the home of the mid-south’s first avocado brownies. Their desserts aren’t just free of dairy or gluten, they are also free of grains, refined sugar, butter, and include organic and local ingredients. If you’re looking for brownies, cupcakes, and even granola bites, Guilt Free Pastries won’t disappoint.

 

Phillip Ashley Chocolates

Phillip Ashley Chocolates is known for its premium gourmet desserts. Owner and ‘designer chocolatier’, Chef Phillip Ashley Rix spent two years crafting the perfect vegan chocolate to now offer dark and milk chocolate treats that are 100% plant-based and gluten free. Flavors include sweet potato avocado, cognac, salted caramel pecan, and blood orange balsamic. If you don’t have time to stop by the Cooper Young location, you can also order online via their virtual chocolate boutique.
