ROOTS, RHIZOMES, AND RADICAL HOPE: INSIDE THE MOVEMENT TO GROW FOOD SOVEREIGNTY IN MEMPHIS

This blog was written by Princess Dumpit

On any given Saturday, Overton Park is a haven for runners, dog walkers, and picnic blankets spread under the canopy of the Old Forest. But come October 17, 2026, the green heart of Memphis will transform again into a living, breathing laboratory for self-reliance.

Now in its fifth year, the Memphis Mushroom Festival (MMF) is shedding the traditional festival playbook. MMF 2026 is offering something far more valuable—and entirely free: the tools to feed yourself, heal your soil, and build independence right in your own backyard.

“Food sovereignty isn’t just a buzzword—it’s about agency,” explains Jessica Shea, founder of You Can Sit With Us, the non-profit organization behind the gathering.

“Memphis faces real challenges with food access and economic inequality. When you show someone how to grow their own edible mushrooms or identify native medicinal plants in a neighborhood park, you aren’t just giving them information—you’re handing them resilience. You’re handing them resilience.”

A Classroom Without Walls

This year’s festival theme, “Food Sovereignty — In Your Own Backyard,” puts practical, beginner-friendly skill-sharing front and center. Rather than passively listening to lectures, attendees will get their hands dirty alongside an incredible lineup of regional educators.

Throughout the day, expert mycologists, wild foragers, urban farmers, and holistic herbalists will guide immersive, small-group sessions across Overton Park:

Hands-On Workshop Tracks: Dive into Fungi Cultivation 101 to build your own indoor grow setup using recycled materials, or drop by The Backyard Farmacy to learn practical remedies using garden herbs.

Forest Floor Foraging: Join local naturalists and ethnobotanists for guided plant identification walks through the woods to safely spot wild edibles.

Soil & Culinary Labs: Watch live cooking showcases featuring cultivated mushrooms, and learn how to turn kitchen waste into nutrient-dense soil during interactive composting labs.

Cultivating Community Care

Beyond the workshops, MMF 2026 creates an interactive, high-energy environment for all ages—and you can even bring your pets!

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets, and wagons to set up comfortably for the day, and musical instruments are warmly welcomed for open jams and community acoustic vibes.

A Sacred Pause in a Turbulent World

We are living in an era defined by overwhelming noise and rapid disruption. From skyrocketing grocery prices, inflation, and economic strain to global conflict, geopolitical uncertainty, and hyper-processed foods stripped of real nourishment, the modern baseline feels increasingly shaky. Add to that the rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence and digital overload, and many of us find ourselves burnout-ridden and disconnected—from our food, our planet, and each other.

MMF 2026 offers an essential antidote to modern exhaustion: a dedicated space to hit pause.

It’s a gentle, powerful invitation to step away from the screens, drop the daily stress, and sink your hands into real dirt. Here, you can reconnect with your inner self, learn to nourish your body with honest, living food, and remember what it feels like to share space with a compassionate, grounded community—keeping the entire event free for all Memphians.

Whether you have a multi-acre homestead or a single sunny windowsill in an apartment, MMF 2026 proves that the seeds of a more resilient Mid-South are already beneath our feet.

The Memphis Mushroom Festival takes place Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM CST at Overton Park, Poplar Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee.

Admission is free.
