Now is the Time. Memphis is the Place.

Revitalization Project Brings Unique Barber, Salon, & Lifestyle Store To South Main

387 South Main  St. Memphis, TN 38103 has been an eyesore on the Main St. stroll for over 20 years. What was once a Hunter Fan Manufacturing facility opened in 1928, later became a vacant building. Receptive to the charm and character of the brick building, local entrepreneurs and  business owners, Erika Smith, Chad West, and Elaine Clayton sought out to restore the life of the building. Envisioning the ultimate urban mixed use site, the team established a salon (Salon 387) on the upper floor and (Stock&Belle) an apparel/home goods store on the bottom floor. With such a marvelous addition to our city, Choose901 had to get the scoop. We met with and interviewed, Salon 387 artist/barber, Wallis Ashley.

Wallis is a life long Memphian, die hard Grizzlies fan, and master stylist/barber! She has worked in the beauty industry for over 10 years; and has wicked skills working with hair of men and women; as well as cosmetology. Word on the street is she gives a gnarly fade, inspiring her nickname Wallis The Barber or “barberess”.

I love Memphis because it’s home. I’m grateful to be a part of a city that has so much heart, it definitely keeps me inspired. Over the past couple of years I’ve really enjoyed watching the city’s growth & I hope we aren’t finished yet! We have started to come together as a city to bring back parts of Memphis we all knew and once loved!! I’m proud to be in MEMPHIS and I would “choose 901” any day of the week! and ps– GO GRIZZ!

When Elaine asked Wallis to join and help build Salon 387, she was stoked knowing herself and the team Elaine was constructing would give Memphis the salon and barber shop it deserved. Wallis says she’s excited to be a part of Downtown Memphis, and since South Main is the Arts’ District it only makes sense to have Wallis and the other Salon 387 artists on site. And the Salon387 team plan to celebrate with South Main every single Trolley Night! Salon387 offers a wide variety of services to suit the needs of men and women. With 5 stylists and 1 barber on site, Salon387 is your one stop shop!

As the barber, I plan to give my clients an experience that is a mimic of an “old timey” barber shop experience. From the hot towel facials, to deep cleanse shampoo with scalp massage, the men really do feel pampered. For the men that are really in tune with their grooming, I will be offering straight razor shaves starting this summer!

Let’s not forget the 1st floor addition, Stock & Belle! Need a hand crafted backpack? Stock & Belle. Local Kyle Taylor Art? Stock & Belle. Midcentury sofa? Stock & Belle. Wooden handle pizza cutter? Stock & Belle. Fresh local flowers? Stock & Belle. You can find just about anything you can imagine in this retail space!

Salon387 and Stock & Belle are a significant addition to the South Main Community and Memphis! Memphians serving Memphians, check out this local and innovative revitalization project, schedule an appointment with Wallis, or drop in to meet the Salon387 team and peruse Stock & Belle!
