Jimmy Lewis, formerly of Squash Blossom Market, will soon be opening a new craft coffee roaster at Broad and Tillman (584 Tillman, Suite 1) called Relevant Roasters.
They will feature convection-roasted, environmentally sustainable whole bean and ground coffee. Following renovations, Lewis intends to be operating by the end of August with first batches ready in mid-to-late September. He plans to sell to local coffee houses and targeted specialty grocers.
Their goal is to “prepare the highest quality coffee roasted in Memphis. We are focused on innovation, excellence, and environmental sustainability. By reducing the time between roasting and drinking, we provide delicious coffee and memorable experiences.”
“A good cup of coffee is nice; a great cup of coffee is awesome,” said Lewis, founder and owner of Relevant Roasters. “I hope to capture that curious group of people who want to try something new.”
Lewis’s experience in food retail began at the forefront of the healthy food movement with his specialty local grocery concept Squash Blossom. After selling Squash Blossom to Wild Oats in 1997, he entered the world of commercial real estate and formed Lewis and Rasberry, now Rasberry CRE. While Lewis still manages some properties, he left the brokerage business to focus on coffee roasting.
“I decided that it was important to have fulfillment in work so I asked myself what that would look like and went through a series of exercises that had to do with desire,” he said. “What emerged was I loved the coffee culture. I loved preparing wonderful coffee and I thought the coffee being produced locally could be improved upon.”
Lewis will be roasting and bagging coffee for wholesale, then hopes to start selling it by the pound directly to consumers.
