Penny Hardaway Named to Coach of the Year Watch List

Memphis is no stranger to producing legends, and once again, one of our own is making waves on the national stage. Penny Hardaway, head coach of the University of Memphis men’s basketball team, has been named to the 2025 Werner Ladder Naismith Men’s College Coach of the Year Watch List presented by AXIA Time—an honor reserved for the best of the best in college basketball coaching.

Hardaway, a Memphis native and former Tigers star, is one of only 15 coaches nationwide to earn a spot on the prestigious list. Even more impressive? He’s the only coach representing the American Athletic Conference (AAC), proving that the Memphis Tigers are a force to be reckoned with on the national level. With a 21-5 record this season and a No. 22 national ranking, Hardaway has led the Tigers back to the forefront of college basketball, putting the city back in the national conversation.

Why This Matters for Memphis

For Memphians, Penny Hardaway is a hometown hero, a former NBA All-Star, and a dedicated leader who has invested in the city and its youth both on and off the court. His leadership has revitalized the Tigers program and reignited the city’s passion for college basketball.

Since taking over as head coach in 2018, Hardaway has consistently elevated the program, bringing in top-tier recruiting classes, competing at the highest level, and fostering a winning culture. This season is no different, as the Tigers have spent 10 of 16 weeks ranked in the AP Top 25.

But beyond the X’s and O’s, Hardaway’s impact is felt throughout Memphis as a whole. From launching initiatives to support young athletes in underserved communities to championing Memphis as a basketball powerhouse, he continues to give back to the city that raised him.

How the Award Works

The Werner Ladder Naismith Men’s College Coach of the Year award is one of the most prestigious honors in college basketball. Here’s how it works:

  • On March 14, 2025, the list of 15 coaches will be narrowed down to 10 semifinalists.
  • That list will be cut to four finalists on March 24, 2025.
  • The winner will be announced on April 6, 2025, during the Final Four in Phoenix, Arizona.

Hardaway is up against some big names in college basketball, including Tom Izzo (Michigan State), Bruce Pearl (Auburn), Rick Pitino (St. John’s), and Jon Scheyer (Duke). But given what he’s done for Memphis, there’s a strong case for why he should take home the trophy.

A Legacy of Excellence

Hardaway’s recognition is another chapter in a storied basketball career that started right here in the 901. He dominated the courts at Treadwell High School and lead Memphis State (now the University of Memphis) to the 1992 NCAA Elite Eight.

After a successful NBA career, Hardaway returned home, determined to bring Memphis basketball back to national prominence. And he’s done just that, building a team that is not only competitive but also represents the grit, hustle, and heart of this city.

What’s Next for the Tigers?

With March Madness right around the corner, all eyes will be on Hardaway and the Tigers as they push for a strong finish to the season. A deep tournament run could solidify Hardaway’s place as one of the nation’s elite coaches and bring even more recognition to Memphis.

Whether he takes home the Naismith Coach of the Year award or not, one thing is clear: Penny Hardaway is already a champion in the hearts of Memphians. His leadership is shaping the future of Memphis basketball, inspiring the next generation, and keeping the city’s love for the game as strong as ever.

So, Memphis, let’s rally behind our coach, support our Tigers, and show the world that Memphis basketball is here to stay.

💙🏀 Go Tigers Go! 🏀💙
