UPDATE: After speaking to a member of the MATA board, the main motivation for this temporary fix is to bring some relief to South Main businesses who have suffered without the charming and tourist friendly transit option.
Pictures are out of the new trolleys after MATA announced new buses designed to look like trolleys as reported by Lauren Squires of Action News 5. This comes after months of hybrid buses running in place of the trolleys.
First MATA ran alternate routes on Front Street and Second Street. Then, a few months ago they started running those buses on the trolley tracks. Now, the new buses, referred to as rubber-wheeled trolleys, will be running on Main Street while a permanent solution is worked out. No word yet on when they will start running or how much longer we will be waiting for a permanent solution.
Paul Morris, President of the Downtown Memphis Commission told us to expect these new trolleys by September, and they hope to have real trolleys back soon.
@stevenrussell MATA is committed to bringing back “real” trolleys, but not necessarily the original ones. Probably new, replica ones.
