Mochiatsu Brings Mochi Donuts and Korean Corndogs to the Mid-South

A new kind of donut shop has landed just south of Memphis, bringing something rare and exciting to the local food scene. Mochiatsu opened its doors in Southaven in September 2024, offering mochi donuts and Korean corndogs—two treats that have been hard to find outside of major cities. Behind this new hotspot is Richard, a long-time Memphian whose career path took a bold turn from nail salons to specialty sweets. His story shows how love for a city and a willingness to take risks can create something truly unique.

From Memphis Roots to Mochi Donuts

Richard moved to Memphis in 1997, carrying with him a strong work ethic and a desire to build something of his own. He spent many years in the nail salon industry, helping customers feel their best while planting roots in the community. He also attended the University of Memphis, deepening his connection to the city that he now proudly calls home.

In 2012, Richard moved just across the state line to Southaven. As time went on, his passion for food grew. A self-described foodie, he began noticing that many of the desserts and snacks he loved, especially mochi donuts and Korean corndogs, weren’t available in the Mid-South. These treats were easy to find in bigger cities, but not here. So he decided to change that.

A Leap of Faith

Mochiatsu opened in September 2024 with a mission to introduce Memphis and the surrounding area to soft, chewy mochi donuts and crispy, savory Korean corndogs. All of the shop’s donuts are made from scratch, including the icing, and they use less sugar than traditional donuts, making them a lighter, but still flavorful, option.

With over 20 flavors on rotation, customers can try everything from blueberry to matcha, oreo to biscoff cookie, along with seasonal options that keep things fresh. The shop sees its biggest rush between 3-5 p.m., especially with kids stopping by after school for a treat.

Mochiatsu also makes it easy for customers to order online through their website at mochiatsu.com, adding convenience to the experience.

Advice for Future Entrepreneurs

Richard knows firsthand that big changes come with big risks. When asked what advice he would give to someone wanting to start their own business in Memphis, he didn’t hesitate. “Get out of your comfort zone, take a leap of faith, don’t become complacent, take the risk, create a niche that doesn’t exist.”
