MEMShop aims to attract visitors to and give them retail options in the Heritage Trail area before development begins. The Heritage Trail itself, once it’s completed, will weave through meaningful historical sites of Memphis.
The National Endowment for the Arts and the City of Memphis funds this program that has been proactive in filling empty stores in Broad Avenue, Crosstown, and Soulsville. MEMShop plans to plans to place three retails businesses on the probable track for the Heritage Trail for 6 months. They will help start-up the trail, while trying to jumpstart the area by encouraging people to visit.
Businesses have the chance to test the waters of this new development without a high risk. Since the contract is a mere 6 months rather than the typical long-term agreements, businesses can decide to stay or leave. Some of the notable businesses who have participated with MEMShop include Five in One Social Club, Co-Motion Studio, and My Heavenly Creations.
A non-profit organization, Communities Unlimited, will manage the MEMShop operation. They will help with technical are marketing practices, negotiate with property owners, and handle logistical properties of the program.
