#MemphisMentors

When you were young, who helped you grow? Who pushed you to become who you were meant to be? Who walked with you as a friend, a teacher, a constructive critic, and a pathfinder?

They say, it takes a village to raise a child, and we think it takes a city to see to their success. Our city’s youth holds the keys to our future, and the prosperity of generations to come—so if you have a few hours to spare, why not spend them making an impact as a Memphis mentor?

Has any one of us accomplished what we’ve accomplished by ourselves? — Elliot Perry

Just the mention of mentoring can make some of us wonder, ‘Am I enough?’ and ‘What do I have to offer?’ Well, we’re here to tell you that, for a young person in Memphis, you’ve got just enough insight to share, enough words of encouragement to speak, and just enough care to give.

Did you know that young adults who have a mentor are:

  • 55% less likely than their peers to skip a day of school
  • 78% more likely to volunteer in their communities
  • 90% more likely to become mentors themselves
  • And 130% more likely to hold leadership positions in the work place?

There are so many young people in need in our city, and mentoring carries a ton of potential value. It’s a game-changer.

And the good news is that mentoring can take many forms. It doesn’t have to be intimidating, or take up a lot of time. It doesn’t even have to be super formal, and you don’t have to do it alone.

There are a number of routes you can take to shape and mold the young lives in your community—and who knows, you might just be the missing puzzle piece that can help a fellow Memphian make moves!

Here’s how to get started:

We invited some prominent Memphians to take us to places that played a key role in their development, and tell the stories of the people who influenced them to become who they are today.
