The series officially premieres nationwide the very next day on Hulu (September 5), but Memphis gets the chance to see it first.

What is Memphis to the Mountain about?

From the team that brought us the award-winning documentary Black Ice, this new series shines a spotlight on nine climbers from Memphis Rox, the world’s largest non-profit climbing gym right in Soulsville.

We watch as they trade the walls of their community gym for the real rock of Mount Kenya, training, pushing, and conquering literal and figurative peaks.

As Memphis Rox reminds us daily: “We climb higher when we climb together.”

A Story Rooted in Memphis Rox

Since opening its doors in 2018, Memphis Rox has been a climbing gym, a safe haven, a launchpad, and a symbol of hope for South Memphis. By removing financial barriers (no one is turned away for inability to pay), Rox has redefined what access, community, and adventure look like in our city.

And Memphis to the Mountain captures that spirit in action, taking the lessons learned in Soulsville all the way to Africa.

Dedicated to Jarmond “Mond” Johnson

One of the series’ central figures is Jarmond “Mond” Johnson, a beloved Memphis Rox employee whose life was tragically cut short before the film’s release. His presence in the docuseries is a moving reminder of his legacy and the lives he touched.

Mond once shared with Men’s Health:

“I never knew something that I used to escape the drama going on in front of me could lead me all the way to Africa.”

This series is dedicated to his memory and to all those who continue to embody his spirit of humility, joy, and love.

Why You Should Go

This is a chance to show up for Memphis Rox, honor Mond, and celebrate the bold, creative spirit that Memphis shares with the world. Whether you climb or not, this story is for you. It’s about finding your foothold, leaning on your people, and daring to reach higher.
