Memphis’ Own Mark Greaney Drops The Hard Line

The #1 New York Times bestselling author celebrates his 15th Gray Man novel with a hometown launch

Memphis has long been a city of storytellers, and Mark Greaney is one of our own.

The lifelong Memphian and #1 New York Times bestselling author released The Hard Line, the 15th installment in his wildly popular Gray Man series, in February. To celebrate, Greaney returned to Novel. bookstore in East Memphis for a packed signing event, reminding fans that no matter how global his stories become, Memphis is always home base.

A Global Thriller with Memphis Roots

Greaney, author of 27 novels, introduced readers to the newest chapter in the life of Court Gentry, better known as the Gray Man.

“The Hard Line is the 15th book in my Gray Man series. It follows my lead character, a guy named Court Gentry… a former CIA officer. In this book, he and his team called Ghost Town are up in D.C. trying to find five international assassins who’ve been brought into the United States.”

At the center of the action is a personal showdown between Court and a Northern Irish assassin named Whetstone layered into a larger international conspiracy. It’s high-stakes, fast-paced storytelling that has become Greaney’s signature.

And while the plot spans continents, the author’s foundation is firmly Memphis.

A Standalone Story Perfect for New Readers

Even though it’s book 15, The Hard Line was intentionally written as a standalone novel.

“It’s been very important in my career where every book is a standalone novel. Even though this is the 15th book in the series, you don’t have to have read any of the others… Each book is self-contained and that’s just always the way I like to write them.”

That accessibility opens the door for new readers to jump in, whether they discovered the Gray Man through the Netflix adaptation or are picking up the series for the first time at their neighborhood bookstore.

Memphis Made

Greaney’s storytelling discipline started right here.

“Memphis is where I’ve lived my entire life. My dad was a journalist here… I grew up around the news.”

His father, who worked at WMC News Channel 5, played a pivotal role in shaping his writing career editing his early drafts and instilling curiosity and work ethic. Those newsroom roots still influence how Greaney pulls ideas from real-world headlines to keep his long-running series fresh.

Repping Memphis Everywhere He Goes

Despite traveling to more than 30 countries for research, Greaney says Memphis stands apart.

“Memphis is really one of my favorite places… I really enjoy the music and the culture, obviously the food and the people. Different parts of Memphis feel like completely different cities from one another.”

And when it came time to launch The Hard Line, he made sure to celebrate locally at Novel. in East Memphis, emphasizing his support for independent bookstores and encouraging readers to shop local (or grab a copy from the library).

A Series That Keeps Evolving

After 27 books, including collaborations with Tom Clancy, Greaney continues to innovate. By weaving real-world geopolitics and everyday inspiration into his fiction, he keeps the Gray Man universe timely and relevant.

Mark Greaney proves you can build an international brand without ever losing your 901 roots.
