Memphis in Bloom: Dixon Gardens Named One of the South’s Best Places to See Tulips

National spotlight shines on a Memphis spring tradition with hundreds of thousands of blooms

Memphis just earned another reason to celebrate spring. Southern Living has named Dixon Gallery & Gardens one of the “6 Best Places to See Tulips Blooming in the South,” putting our city alongside destinations across the region and proving once again that Memphis belongs on every must-visit list.

A National Nod for a Memphis Gem

In its March 2026 roundup, Southern Living highlighted Dixon Gallery & Gardens as Tennessee’s standout tulip destination. The recognition places Memphis in elite company with gardens and farms from Georgia to Virginia, all known for their gorgeous spring displays.

But here’s what makes Memphis special: The Dixon one of the most accessible and community-centered experiences featured, and it’s FREE forever!

Half a Million Reasons to Visit

This spring, Dixon is going big. In honor of its 50th anniversary, the gardens planted a record-breaking 650,000 tulip bulbs across 17 acres. That means waves of color, carefully curated beds, and plenty of space to explore at your own pace.

Visitors can also spot something brand new: the ‘Margaret Oates Dixon’ tulip, a newly named variety that honors the garden’s founder and legacy in Memphis.

More Than Flowers

Dixon offers more than a photo-worthy stroll. Saturday tulip walks give visitors a guided way to experience the blooms, while the on-site gallery features European and American art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

And the best part? It’s free. That makes it one of the most inclusive and family-friendly spring outings in the entire South.

Memphis Is in Good Company And Standing Out

While other locations on the list feature U-pick farms and ticketed festivals, Memphis brings something different to the table: a world-class garden experience that’s open to everyone. It’s a reminder that you don’t have to travel far (or spend big) to enjoy something beautiful.

Stop and Smell the Good News

Memphis continues to show up in conversations about culture, beauty, and quality of life.

So if you’re looking for a sign to get outside, this is it. Tulip season is here, and Memphis is officially one of the best places in the South to experience it.
