Meet the Architect: JD Caldwell

JD Caldwell, AIA, is the founder and principal of JD Caldwell Architect, PLLC, a Memphis-based architecture firm focused on creating thoughtful, well-crafted homes rooted in place and purpose. A Memphis native, JD draws inspiration from the vernacular landscape and structures of the South, letting context, materials, and function guide each design. He earned his architecture degree from Auburn University in 2003, where he also spent several years in the university’s Rural Studio program. That hands-on experience continues to influence how he works today, reinforcing the importance of collaboration, craftsmanship, and designing with real people in mind.

With more than 20 years of residential and commercial experience, JD has done just about everything, but custom homes are where his passion truly lies. His approach is simple: listen first, design intentionally, and stay involved from start to finish to make sure each home reflects the people who live in it.

Because no two clients are the same, no two projects look the same for JD. The firm specializes in bespoke residential design, creating homes that reflect both the personality of the homeowner and the setting in which they’re built. He’s designed and renovated homes locally in Chickasaw Gardens, The Cloisters, and River Oaks, as well as outside of Memphis, in Mississippi, North Carolina, and Arkansas.

You might recognize some of his commercial work from the rebuilt Hog & Hominy, which he completed while working at Carlton Edwards. After a devastating fire, the beloved Memphis staple was redesigned to feel clean and contemporary without being austere, featuring expansive glass walls that highlight the barrel-arched roof and open views of the alfresco dining area. Inside, the energy of the bar and the warmth of the interior finishes create a lively atmosphere that mirrors the spirit of the restaurant’s food and community.

A notable residential project JD is currently working on is the historic renovation of the Theora Hamblett Home in Oxford, Mississippi. Working within historic preservation guidelines while updating a home for modern living is always challenging but very rewarding. Updates to the home and property include a new wing on the home and the addition of a pool and garage, as well as updates to the finishes and materials used throughout the original home. The project reflects the firm’s ability to respect a home’s history while thoughtfully preparing it for the future. The design process is highly collaborative, involving not only the client and architect, but also contractors, craftsmen, engineers, interior designers, and a variety of consultants.

JD and his team stay closely involved throughout every phase of the project, from early concepts all the way through construction, ensuring a seamless and well-executed result. JD’s goal is always to translate a client’s ideas and lifestyle into a home that feels personal, functional, and carefully crafted, never cookie-cutter. By staying involved throughout the entire process and maintaining open communication with clients and project partners, the firm is able to create well-executed, client-driven visions of a home. JD says “a sign of a successful project is not just the satisfaction of the client, but the long-lasting relationships that are formed.”
