MATA Rolls Out Free Rides & Bus Passes to Boost Access Across Memphis

No Fare, No Problem: MATA Launches 90-Day Free Ride Pilot

Starting November 16, the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) is making all its transportation services free for 90 days. That means no fare, no passes, and no hassle! Only easy access to buses, trolleys, and MATAplus. It’s all part of MATA’s Zero Fare Pilot, designed to break down barriers and connect Memphians to opportunity.

Nonprofits Can Now Request Free Bus Passes

In another game-changing move, MATA is offering up to 100 free bus passes to local nonprofit organizations. Through a simple online form at matatransit.com, nonprofits can apply to help the people they serve get to where they need to go, whether that’s work, school, the doctor, or the grocery store. It’s one more way MATA is keeping Memphis moving forward.

A Step Toward Equity and Opportunity

Mayor Paul Young and the Memphis City Council backed the initiative, seeing it as a step toward equity.

“Transportation is opportunity.”

And with this new approach, MATA is making sure that more Memphians, especially those in underserved communities, have access to essential services.

Why It Matters

Transportation shouldn’t be a roadblock to a better life. Whether it’s for a job interview, a college class, or a healthcare appointment, this pilot program is all about helping people take that next step. And by partnering with local organizations, MATA is making sure those steps are supported across the board.

Memphis Moves Better Together

The 90-day free ride period is just the start. MATA will study how this program impacts riders, with hopes of shaping a more accessible, affordable transit future for the city. Because when Memphians move freely, the whole city moves forward.
