Knit Happens: Free Family Fun & Creative Community Vibes Coming to Chickasaw Oaks

Grab your yarn and mark your calendars—Memphis is joining a global movement with needles raised high.

On Saturday, June 14 from 10AM to 5PM, Stitching Supply is inviting Memphians to come together at Chickasaw Oaks for a joyful, hands-on celebration of Worldwide Knit in Public Day—the city’s very first official event dedicated to this international movement.

So, what is Worldwide Knit in Public Day?

Launched in 2005, Worldwide Knit in Public Day (or WWKIP Day) is the largest event of its kind across the globe. It was created to bring knitting—and all forms of fiber arts—out of the living room and into the spotlight. The idea is simple: by stitching in public, people spark conversations, challenge stereotypes, and build community. What started as a humble gathering of stitchers is now celebrated in over 57 countries, with thousands of fiber artists participating every year.

Now, thanks to Stitching Supply, Memphis is officially on the WWKIP map.

A Festival of Fiber (And Fun)

If you’ve never been to Stitching Supply, here’s your moment. Tucked inside Chickasaw Oaks, this woman-owned shop has quickly become a beloved haven for fiber artists in Memphis—offering high-quality yarn, creative workshops, and a sense of belonging for anyone looking to stitch, learn, or simply hang out in a cozy, welcoming space.

Owner Erica Carpenter has always envisioned her shop as more than a retail space—it’s a community. And WWKIP Day is the perfect extension of that vision.

“We want to encourage people to knit in public more often. When someone sees you stitching in a coffee shop or park, it starts a conversation. It creates connection. It’s a beautiful way to be present, creative, and communal.”

Four women sit around a table knitting and chatting for Worldwide Knit in Public Day. Yarn, drinks, and supplies are on the table beside an open laptop. Craft supplies and decorations fill the background.

What You’ll Find at the Event:

Expect a festival-like atmosphere as the entire Chickasaw Oaks Mall transforms into a fiber arts playground:

  • Raffles, giveaways, and yarn-themed games all day long

  • Exclusive product launches, including limited-edition yarns from indie dyers like Forbidden Fiber (Covington, TN)

  • Live demos and tutorials from Stitching Supply’s expert instructors—perfect for beginners and curious onlookers

  • New merch drops, including collectible Stitching Supply patches made just for the event

  • Free MemPops while supplies last (yes, please!)

Other Chickasaw Oaks businesses are getting in on the fun too—so whether you’re a seasoned stitcher, a total beginner, or just there for the vibes, there’ll be plenty to explore.

Why It Matters

Events like this do more than showcase a hobby—they foster mindfulness, creativity, and connection. In a world that’s constantly buzzing, stitching offers a moment of calm. It’s meditative. It’s empowering. And it’s a reminder that creativity has no age limit, no gender, and no rules.

This event isn’t just for knitters. It’s for community-builders, creative spirits, and anyone who wants to be part of something joyful and uniquely Memphis.
