JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The Senior Laboratory Technologist prepares laboratory-teaching exercises for the colleges within the UT Health Science Center (UTHSC). This position consults with faculty and uses laboratory protocols and individual research to order and prepare required supplies, reagents and materials for each laboratory session. This position stages and de-stages each laboratory exercise, participates in the exercise to assist faculty as needed, and reviews outcomes.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Coordinates and facilitates student laboratory exercises by ordering or preparing chemical reagents, stains, standards, samples, and unknowns.
Stages and de-stages all chemical laboratory exercises based on protocols and/or consultation with faculty.
Monitors outcome of laboratory experiments for possible protocol revisions.
Performs pre-lab run-through on each lab exercise to establish control ranges.
Participates in laboratory exercises in other subject areas within the department.
Ensures that glassware, work areas, student areas, equipment and components are cleaned and stored correctly following the laboratory exercises.
Performs quality control on all reagents and equipment. Performs inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies; orders supplies in a timely manner and maintains sufficient inventory of product.
Sets-up, calibrates, maintains and trouble-shoots laboratory equipment.
Reviews and manages expenditures and reports in laboratory courses. Plans, balances, and maintains budget for each cost center.
Maintains contact with hospital labs and outside suppliers to secure patient specimens and out-of-date materials for laboratory exercises.
Reviews new techniques, procedures and processes for laboratory training experiments.
Participates in training on all new equipment and laboratory protocols, departmental safety training exercises and clinical laboratory continuing education activities in the Memphis area.
Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology and graduation from a School of Medical Technology accredited by the AMA or its equivalent. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience working in a clinical or teaching laboratory environment. Hands-on experience with responsibility for producing a finished product is required. Management and/or teaching experience in an educational/clinical environment is desirable. Documented experience that exhibits successful interpersonal communication skills and abilities. Prior phlebotomy experience as a Laboratory Generalist in a Core Lab is preferred. Knowledge of general laboratory procedures and safety and equipment operations. Knowledge of chemical laboratory principles, set-up and procedures. Skill in handling, preparing and mixing chemical reagents and producing stains, standards, samples and unknowns. Ability to review laboratory protocols and determine required supplies and materials. Ability to perform pre-lab run-through of laboratory exercises to establish control ranges. Ability to calibrate laboratory equipment and troubleshoot equipment malfunction. Supervisory and management skills. Ability to communicate well both orally and in written form. Ability to be flexible and cooperative in a work environment. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a team. Ability to manage time wisely. Ability to prioritize competing demands. Skills in organizing and preparing laboratory experiments for multiple participants are preferred. Broad knowledge of additional instructional clinical laboratory subject areas, i.e. Blood Bank, Hematology, Microbiology, Urinalysis, etc. is preferred. Must have basic computer skills.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Medical Technologist (MT)/ Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Certification, American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) is required. (COPY OF LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED)
