Lead Animal Control Officer

Position Summary

Enforces state and county animal control laws and ordinances in unincorporated areas of Shelby County.

Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education

 

Minimum Qualifications

1. Three (3) years of experience in the enforcement of codes related to animal and/or vector control in a lead or supervisory capacity; AND

2. High school diploma or possess a GED.

3. PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Receives calls from dispatch and drives the assigned vehicle to the location.

2. Takes possession of animals showing neglect, inhuman treatment, disease, or malnutrition and transports animals to the appropriate agency, shelter, etc.

3. Patrols assigned areas seeking animals that are stray, sick, injured, deceased, unvaccinated, and unlicensed dogs.

4. Investigates and impounds complaints related to potentially dangerous animals as well as, animals running at large.

5. Collects all animal specimens for examination and transports to the state laboratory.

6. Investigates alleged animal abuse, violation of ordinances related to animal care or behavior, or reports of injured, stray, sick, or dangerous animals; interviews individuals having contact with the animal.

7. Makes court appears related to citations and warrants issued.

8. Uses department-issued weapons as needed to capture and/or euthanize animals according to established protocol.

9. Performs related duties as required or directed.

 

KSAs

1. Knowledge of laws and ordinances pertaining to animal and rabies control, search, seizure, and animal collection procedures.

2. Skill in animal identification and observing behavior.

3. Proficient knowledge in Microsoft Word and Excel or similar County’s software.

 

Special Requirements

1. Must have a valid Tennessee driver’s license or secure one as of employment date and maintain a satisfactory driving record.

2. Must attend and complete Animal Control Training Course Level I or II within one year from date of employment.

3. Must be able to be commissioned as an Unarmed Special Deputy.

4. Must be available to work shifts and weekends.

5. Must maintain all required certifications and licenses throughout duration of employment.

 

Physical Requirements

1. Must be able to perform physical activities to apprehend animals.

2. Must be able to work in all types of weather.

3. Must successfully pass a physical assessment.
