Fixed Route Operators

JOB FUNCTION:  Operators will be assigned to operate buses to transport passengers while providing safe, efficient, and on-time service consistent with all federal, state, local and Company applicable rules, regulations, and procedures and per the responsibilities outlined in this job description.


1.      Operates one of several different buses or vans in a safe, courteous, and reliable manner on a designated route within a defined time schedule.

2.      Performs pre-trip inspections of assigned bus to ensure it is functioning properly. Inspects the passenger compartment of the vehicle to ensure it is free from hazards such as spills, loose handrails or stanchions, defectives seats, etc., and that the video camera system and radio system is fully operational. Inspects exterior of vehicle for damage, fluid leaks and tire damage. Makes a record of any defects.

3.      Follows all safety and traffic rules while navigating through traffic along assigned route under various environmental conditions, strictly adhering to time schedules. Is alert and attentive to changes in driving conditions.

4.      Knowledgeable about assigned routes, transfer points and fare structures.

5.      Directs and assists passengers with safe boarding and de-boarding. Provides assistance to passengers with disabilities and the elderly as required, including operating lifts (including manually as necessary) to allow bus access. Properly secures wheelchairs and other mobility devices.

6.      Responsible for the collection of appropriate fares. Distribute and collect tickets and coupons. Operate on-board computer for fare box.  Respond to passenger informational  requests in a courteous and professional manner.

7.      Complies with ADA requirements in the delivery of services.

8.      Advises passengers of rules and regulations when necessary.

9.      Communicates with Radio Room and/ or Dispatch via the two-way radio system in accordance with FCC rules.

10.   Notifies Radio Room and/ or Dispatch of important or critical situations such as passenger medical emergencies, accidents, incidents, vehicle malfunctions, and route deviations or detours or other circumstances that might affect service.

11.   Completes and submits reports concerning accidents and passenger incidents.

12.   Must be willing and able to work various shifts and days as per the labor contract and seniority.

A high school diploma or equivalent (GED).


1.      Must be 21 years of age or older at time of application.

2.      Must pass an online pre-assessment.

3.      No more than 3 driving accidents in a three-year period.

4.      Unless enrolled in a Company CDL training program, a CDL with a P endorsement is required at time of hire.

5.      Must be able to read, write and speak English and be able to communicate effectively with the public. Should be able to comprehend oral instructions as well written bulletins, schedules, and other necessary documents to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to write legibly to complete required documents such as accident and incident reports or trouble cards.

6.      Should be able to read street signs, maps and be able to give directions.

7.      Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.

8.      Must complete all required training as assigned.

9.      Must be willing to comply with MATA’s Drug and Alcohol Policy. As this position is classed as safety sensitive, it is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

10.   Regular and consistent attendance is required.

11.   Must always comply with safety and COVID protocols.

2. Some standing and walking during a normal workday will also be required as well as bending, stooping, twisting, kneeling, and crouching.
3. Must be able to withstand exposure to variable weather conditions, including outdoors.
4. May be required to lift up to 35 pounds and push objects such as doors, windows, emergency hatches, wheelchairs, and ramps.
5. Requires ability to grip a steering wheel and perform hand-over-hand steering of vehicles.
6. Able to express or exchange ideas with others accurately and at an easily audible volume through the use of spoken words. Able to receive detailed information through oral communication or by phone at usual speaking levels and differentiate between sounds in the environment.
7. Close visual acuity to perform detail-oriented activities as well as acuity to perform activities at or within arm’s reach with skill, control, and accuracy such as preparing and analyzing data, viewing a computer screen or for significant reading of documents and other materials.
