Purpose: Inspire and guide students in their artistic exploration, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and technical skills through a comprehensive visual arts curriculum.

Essential Functions

Instruction

  • Develop and deliver high-quality, differentiated lessons that align with the school’s curriculum, academic standards, and Hutchison Learning Principles and Transfer Goals.
  • Actively develop the Hutchison Transfer Goals in each girl through engaging and dynamic teaching practices.
  • Plan lessons, teaching a variety of artistic techniques and skills while ensuring students develop these skills in a sequential and age-appropriate manner.
  • Manage instructional equipment including set up, storage, maintenance and inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Differentiate instruction and provide individualized support for students who need extra help or enrichment. Implement appropriate accommodations as supported by learning plans.
  • Design and implement varied assessments to measure student learning and growth.
  • Use assessment data to adapt teaching strategies, provide timely interventions, and continuously improve instructional practices.
  • Provide timely and meaningful feedback on student work, assessing both formative and summative progress.

The Student-Teacher Relationship

  • Establish strong, supportive relationships with students.
  • Serve as an advisor to guide their academic, social, and emotional growth.
  • Help facilitate and actively participate in student life activities, during the school day and after, such as field trips, service trips, awards night, dances, etc. that add to the overall student experience.
  • Actively contribute to the broader life of the school by engaging in extracurricular activities, such as coaching, advising student clubs, or supporting school events.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues, providing timely and constructive feedback, addressing concerns with sensitivity and respect, and fostering open and honest communication.

The Classroom Environment

  • Create and maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment where students feel valued and encouraged to take intellectual risks.
  • Establish clear expectations for student behavior, academic integrity, and personal responsibility that reinforce the Hutchison Learning Principles, Transfer Goals and Honor Code.

Professionalism

  • Serve as a positive role model for students, promoting Hutchison’s Learning Principles, Transfer Goals, and Hutchison virtues as outlined in the acrostic
  • Demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth by actively engaging in professional development opportunities, staying abreast of current research and trends in education, and continuously refining pedagogical practices.
  • Maintain a professional and respectful demeanor in all interactions with students, colleagues, parents, and community members, upholding the school’s mission and values and serving as a role model for students.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues, contributing to a positive and supportive school environment, sharing resources and expertise, and participating in school-wide initiatives.
  • Adhere to the school’s policies and procedures, maintaining confidentiality, meeting deadlines, and fulfilling all professional responsibilities with diligence and integrity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an area of Visual Arts or Education; Master’s degree and teacher licensure preferred
  • A minimum of three years of experience as a classroom teacher; five years preferred
  • Experience teaching Advanced Placement (AP) Art and Design courses, with a proven track record of student success on AP exams preferred.
  • Active and ongoing practice as a professional artist, with a portfolio of recent work demonstrating artistic excellence and engagement with the contemporary art world. This could include exhibitions, publications, awards, or other forms of professional recognition preferred.
  • High moral character, pleasing personality, and generally compatible with existing staff
  • Positive example for students in conduct, speech, and general appearance
  • Physically able to perform the duties of the job including but not limited to moving, setting up and putting away equipment, move agilely, and able to lift or move 25 to 50 lbs.
