Director of Elder Care Ministries

This part-time position keeps church and elderly members connected, helps elderly members and families with life transitions, and offers limited services to promote congregational health.
This includes, but is not limited to:

Responsibilities:
• Visiting elderly and homebound on regular basis.
• Visit those recovering from recent hospitalizations and recommend a care plan for the church.
• Keep current on community and home care resources.
• Make referrals to community resources.
• Assist family caregivers with knowledge of resources.
• Assess social emotional and familial problems precipitated by an illness or the need for care and refer to appropriate help.
• Oversight of home bound communion teams.
• Maintain lending of home care items (walkers, wheelchairs, etc.)
• Oversee prayer shawl volunteers.
• With Congregational Care, coordinate sending of cards to elderly/shut in members at birthday, Christmas…
• With Congregational Care, coordinate volunteers to assist.
• Provide feedback to ministers regarding health of those assigned.
• Keep accurate record of information, recommendations, referrals, etc.
• Maintain database of persons and organizations necessary to accomplish the mission.
• Advisor for GUMC families of elder care options during times of transitions.
• Coordinate occasional senior care educational or health event.
• Other functions as needed.
• Willingness to participate in funeral service if requested.

Relationship with Church Staff and Committees
• Reports to Senior Minister.
• Weekly Pastoral Care Team Meeting.
• Attend monthly Pastor’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
• Liaison to monthly Senior Adult Council.
• Work cooperatively at various times with Congregational Care Director.

Required Qualifications, Functions and Skills
• Evidence of love for, and ability to relate to, senior adults and their needs.
• Active, growing Christian disciple.
• Experience in social welfare and medical advocacy.
• Communication/technology skills, and responsible social media use.
• Ability to work as part of a team.
