General summary:
The Summer Camp Instructor creates and implements an innovative, dynamic summer camp
curriculum for grades 1-8 at the Dixon Art Camp. The Camp Instructor works under the
supervision of the Camp Director and supervises an Assistant Instructor and a High School
Intern. Camp Instructors should exhibit enthusiasm for learning and the ability to create a fun,
supportive, and creative environment. Camp Instructors should have flexibility for quickly
changing tasks and expectations, and experience working with a diverse group of learners.
About the camp: Dixon Art Camp is a free, week-long experience for Memphis Shelby County
School students in rising grades 1-8, hosted June 16th -20th and 23rd – 27th, 2025.
During each week, campers explore a variety of media and techniques alongside enthusiastic artist mentors.
Using the beautiful Dixon grounds and collections as inspiration, students learn about the
museum and art through this one-of-a-kind experience. Once the first week is completed, the
curriculum is repeated for a second week with a new group of campers.
Job duties and responsibilities:
• Attend all required training and camp meetings prior to the camp start date. Training will
occur the week before camp begins (June 9th-13th). Any meetings will be scheduled on an
individual basis.
• Create an innovative, fun, experience oriented curriculum. Art lessons should prioritize
process over product and utilize the Dixon’s unique collection and grounds as inspiration.
• Monitor campers to ensure a positive and safe experience for all.
• Implement daily art and garden projects that expose campers to new materials and
experiences.
• Prepare materials for a variety of activities throughout the day to ensure smooth
transitions.
• Delegate daily tasks to Assistant Instructor and High School Interns.
• Encourage positive interactions between campers and between children and adults.
• Communicate supply and space needs with the Camp Director and other Camp Instructors.
• Cordially share spaces and supplies with the camp.
• Ensure a safe and caring environment for all visitors.
• Straighten, clean, reset and generally keep camp activity areas in order daily.
• Anticipate the needs of campers with diverse learning styles.
• Maintain a cordial, cooperative working relationship with staff, campers, and parents.
• Learn as much as possible about the museum, its history, exhibits, plants, and
enthusiastically share that information with others.
• Support and adhere to the mission, work rules, policies and procedures of the Dixon Gallery
and Gardens.
