Job Description:
The Lead Barista is responsible for upholding the coffee quality and service program at City & State.
He or she will be responsible for overseeing the coffee and tea program, ensuring high-quality standards in preparation, service, and training. This includes training new employees, ensuring prep levels are updated and maintained, and collaborating with the Barista team on menu selections.
On the bar, the individual acts as a positive influence, looks to optimize operations, ensures cleanliness, and serves customers. The position also involves conducting training workshops, maintaining recipe logs, and leading education efforts through special events and special training.
The Lead Barista serves as a role model to their team in hospitality, drink and food preparation.
Job Responsibilities:
Oversight of coffee & tea program:
- Works closely with the Store Manager and owners to develop and maintain process and high quality standards in coffee preparation, service, and training
- Trains new employees on City & State coffee standards as well provides feedback to the Store Manager on overall new employee assessment
- Ensures correct prep levels are followed and maintained when on shift
- Works closely with the Barista team to select annual rosters for Featured Roasters and coffees
- Participates and collaborates with the Baristas, Store Manager and owners on new seasonal menus
Works on Bar
- Is a constant positive influence for all baristas and customers while on premise and on working shifts
- Looks to optimize and find efficiencies in bar operations, prep work, service (dishes, taking orders, maintaining the space)
- Ensures the space (inside and patio) are kept clean and maintained
- Provides real time conflict resolution with customers and between fellow employees
Training Workshop/internal
- Ensures there is clarity and consistency in new menu offerings, recipes, and procedures
- Facilitates training sessions for new and existing employees on new menu preparations and procedures
- Communicates with other staff on any necessary or relevant information specific to the coffee and tea service and offerings
- Maintains a working log/book of coffee and syrup recipes
Public Education
- Prepares and conducts cupping events
- Acts as lead contact with outside coffee vendors
- Aids in the creation of digital content and in-store to educate the general public about City & State coffee standards and approach
Requirements:
- 3+ years working in a specialty coffee retail environment
- Strong technical barista skills in all areas of drink preparation (i.e., brewing, espresso, milk, drink development)
- Familiarity with online collaboration and organization tools including Google Docs/apps
