Memphis is a Place of Refuge

Jamison Puckett’s journey to national recognition started in Memphis, the city that he calls home. Born in Memphis, he moved away during his middle school years but found his way back at age 19. “Memphis was a place of refuge for me,” Jamison recalls. His return to the city was driven by a need for direction and self-discovery. “I was trying to find out who I was again, and Memphis was where I needed to be.” This reconnection with his hometown laid the foundation for his music career.

Falling Back in Love with Memphis

Despite some initial reservations, Jamison’s view of Memphis changed dramatically after his return. “At first, I had a distaste for Memphis. It felt like I was bowing out from life by coming back, but then I started praying for a heart for the city.” Soon, Jamison found himself inspired by the city’s unique culture. “I started seeing the beauty in its diversity and the hidden artists who make the city so eclectic,” he explains. For him, Memphis is a city filled with undiscovered talent, with artists creating “world-changing music” right in the heart of the city.

The Memphis Music Influence

Music has always been central to Jamison’s life. Growing up, his family was involved in church music. His dad was a choir director at Central North for a bit, his parents were both in Bellevue Baptist, his brother was a singer and youth leader at Hope Church. Throughout his childhood, he was involved in each of these churches in different ways.

But it wasn’t until he returned to Memphis that he fully understood the city’s influence on his sound. “Memphis isn’t about following trends or competition,” Jamison explains. “It’s about self-expression and originality. The city supports artists who are willing to give their heart, untouched and untamed.” This raw and authentic nature of Memphis music continues to shape Jamison’s artistic journey.

Serendipity and Success

Jamison’s journey on The Voice began with his performance of Journey’s “Faithfully,” a song his wife chose for him. “It was serendipitous,” he shares. Around the same time the song was selected, Jamison and his wife found out they were expecting a child. This connection made the performance even more meaningful. “It’s a deeply meaningful song that expresses the human heart, and it connected with me in ways I didn’t expect,” Jamison says. His heartfelt performance earned him a spot on Team Michael Bublé, marking a major milestone in his career.

Representing Memphis on a National Stage

As Jamison continues his journey on The Voice, he is clear about how he wants to represent Memphis. “Being a Memphian means everyone is in their personal grind, their own struggle and journey. My hope is to show Memphis through my passion and dedication to the grind, but also through my support for other artists.” This collaborative spirit, which is so central to the Memphis music scene, has been key to his experience on The Voice. “We’re not in competition with each other; we’re building each other up, just like we do in Memphis.”

Jamison’s Connection to Memphis

Even as he pursues new opportunities in Los Angeles, Jamison remains deeply connected to Memphis. “I miss Memphis. I miss the culture, the people, and the raw energy of the city,” he says. He looks forward to collaborating with Memphis artists and hopes to bring his growing family back to the city often. “Memphis was fundamental in shaping who I am, and I want my son to experience that too.”

A Dark Horse City

For Jamison, Memphis embodies resilience and creativity. “Memphis is a dark horse,” he says. “It’s a gritty city that thrives in the face of adversity, and that’s something I’m proud to carry with me.” Whether performing on The Voice or collaborating with local artists, Jamison Puckett is committed to representing the spirit of Memphis wherever his music takes him.
