Memphis families shouldn’t lose hundreds of dollars of their hard-earned refunds to file their taxes.
In partnership with Rhodes, Christian Brothers, and University of Memphis and sponsored by AutoZone, SaveFirst is pleased to offer free tax preparation services to families throughout the Memphis area. The tax preparation service is aimed at assisting families eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which is the federal government’s largest and most successful program to supplement incomes of hard-working families. However, each year, Memphis EITC recipients lose millions of dollars in paying commercial tax preparation simply to access this benefit. These tax services are provided by IRS-certified students from Rhodes College, Christian Brothers University, and the University of Memphis as well as Impact America – Tennessee AmeriCorps members.
Each of these campuses is providing service-learning opportunities for their students to participate, ranging from business courses to poverty and social work courses.
Tax services are offered at four locations in Memphis beginning January 18:
- Binghampton Development Corporation – 280 Tillman St, Memphis, TN 38112
- Streets Ministries – 430 Vance Ave, Memphis, TN 38126
- Ed Rice Community Center – 2907 N Watkins St, Memphis, TN 38127
- Church Health Wellness Center – 1115 Union Ave, Memphis, TN 38104
Families who made up to $52,000 last year with kids in the home, or up to $20,000 last year with no kids in the home are eligible for this service. Call 1-844-TAXES-TN to schedule a free appointment. Daytime, evening, and Saturday hours are available.
