I’m from the backwoods of Woodstock and the soulfulness of 926 E. McClemore, Soulsville is what they call it.
I was on the drumline at Millington Central High School and got to lick strawberry ice cream in a First Tennessee commercial when I was about four. I’ve had about three concussions, and one of them was from falling off a moving vehicle. Yes, I know painful. My name is Corey Martin and I’ve lived in Memphis my entire life.
Growing up I was the most competitive kid wherever I went. I played little league football, basketball, and baseball as a child, so you couldn’t tell me too much of nothing. I might not have been the strongest, but I was surely the fastest out there. For some reason my dad, Louis Martin always disagrees with me about being the best there was. He always tells this fake story of one my first kickoffs in Bantam League football. His version is that when I received the ball and saw everyone running at me I turned around and ran the wrong way. If I remember correctly I ran around to the other sideline and took it in for six. He says he has footage but still hasn’t shown it, so we’ll just go with my story until he does.
I also started participating in the Stax Music Academy After School and Summer Camp programs in 2008 and graduated in 2013. I’ve been blessed to sing at Carnegie Hall in New York City with my high school choir and look forward to my third Spain and Portugal gospel tour this Christmas and New Year’s. It’s been a long journey, but I am finally in my final year at Alcorn State University and I will graduate in May of 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with an Education concentration.
Honestly, I’ve prayed about having the opportunity to work with Choose901 for a while and took a leap of faith throwing my name in the hat for the internship. I don’t know how many other individuals applied for the position, but I can say I’m eternally grateful for this amazing opportunity!
