How’s it going? My name is William Suggs, though these days most people just call me Will. Currently, I am a graduate student studying visual media at the University of Memphis. I’m also going to serve as one of your community writers for a while. I am super excited to be writing for Choose901 and can’t wait to share my experiences in Memphis with you all. But first, a little about me.
It’s been quite a journey getting to where I am now. I earned my undergraduate degree from the U of M in 2016 with a Communication degree, but I did not know what I wanted to do. I tried teaching, but I quickly realized it wasn’t for me. After spending the summer working at Starbucks, I went back to school in 2018 to get my Master’s in design. It’s been a fun ride, and I’m learning a lot about design as well as writing which is what you will be getting from me.
The best thing about writing for Choose901 is the fact that I’ll get to learn more about Memphis. My brother and I were born and raised here, but my parents weren’t, so I don’t really have deep Memphis roots like a lot of people I know of. My family and I are always finding and trying things in Memphis that are new to us, but there are times when I feel like we’ve only scratched the surface. Memphis is the only place I’ve ever lived, so it is important for me to know all that I can about the city. Who knows, I may even become a true expert on Memphis life and culture.
God and family are the things that I care most about. They’re the things that have shaped my life in more ways than I can count. I thank the Lord for where I am today in life, and I thank my family for all the support and help they’ve given me even when I’ve been notoriously stubborn (looking at you mom). Another thing I really like? One word, food.
Like most people, I love trying new food and new styles of cuisine, but I’m a simple dude. My favorite foods are wings and my mom’s meatloaf. In the case of wings, I like them so much that I once spent a school semester trying all the wing spots I came across in my free time. So far, my favorite spot is Mr. P’s, but I hear Wing Guru and Ching’s are the spots to try. Seriously though, one of the things in my food bucket list is to go to different places in the country and the world just to try the food. My first stop would be Japan. Food is awesome and I will try anything that is put in front of me (except chitterlings…never again).
The things that I am most interested in writing about are food, sports, people and events. As mentioned before, I find food to be a wonderful thing. I love learning about sports and hearing the history behind it all. Ask me about any sport, and I could probably carry on a conversation about it (I even know a little bit about curling). People are always interesting and there are always events happening that people need to know about. I guess that’s all you guys need to know about me. It’s going to be a blast going on this journey with you all. Let’s have some fun!
