This weekend, bond with your fur baby and help the Humane Society save more fur babies at The Fast & The Furriest 5K!

The Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County is hosting its 10th Annual Fast & The Furriest 5k Run/Walk this Saturday, March 16 at 9 AM. It’s the only local race where not only can you bring your doggo, but you and your doggo can go for the gold.

Since 1933, the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County has been giving animals “a second chance at life.” The race helps to raise money for the Humane Society’s life-saving mission, which is to rescue injured and abused animals.

“The Fast and the Furriest 5k is a true community event where people come together in strong support of the humane treatment of animals and to celebrate the joy these furry family members bring to our lives.  It also raises much-needed funds to care for the most vulnerable animals in our community –  the injured, abused, and neglected. Our shelter team provides exemplary medical care, nutritious food, warm, clean beds, long walks, and love.  For many of these animals, this is the first time in their life that they have been treated with kindness and can feel protected and secure. The funds raised by this event will be used to provide these animals food, medical treatment, and shelter. It will give them the time and care they need to learn what love feels like and know that there are people who care about them and for them.” – Ellen Zahariadis, Executive Director, HSMSC

There are a few different ways you can participate:

  • You can compete in the chip-timed 5K run with two heats. The first heat will include runners without dogs and the second will include those with dogs. The awards will be given to those with the best net/chip time in either heat.
  • You can run the 5k without chipped timing.
  • If you and your best buddy aren’t up for running, you can go at your own pace in the one-mile walk. Kids can even get in on the fun in their own separate one-mile untimed walk.
  • Whether you walk or run, costumes and outfits are highly encouraged and your dog might bring home the award for best dressed.
  • If you can’t make it to the race at all but still want to support it, you can be a Ghost Runner for $25 and get yourself a t-shirt as a “thank you.”

The race and walk will take place rain or shine in the area surrounding the Humane Society’s headquarters located at 935 Farm Road. Afterward, runners and walkers can cool down on the Humane Society’s lawn and enjoy an awards ceremony, vendors, food, music, and fun.

To register for the 5K run/walk and view the schedule, visit the race website. You can register right up until 9:00 am on race day. The registration fee includes the race, a t-shirt, and access to the post-race party on the lawn.
