Following your dreams and passions should be a prerequisite for all small business owners, and this is something that Heather Pike and Abby Jestis know a lot about. This pair of fabulous women had seemingly contradictory goals that they wanted to achieve, but through their creativity and drive they have conceived a unique hot spot that is opening soon in midtown Memphis.
Abby went to culinary school in New Orleans and has perfected her craft, as I was privileged enough to experience for myself. Their chocolate raspberry mousse was presented in such a way that it was (almost) a shame to eat it. With Tart, Abby will be offering fancy food for the growing foodie scene here. A favorite item from the menu for both Abby and Heather is the poached egg en brioche that will be topped with finely shaved gruyere and a pijou sauce. The coffee will not disappoint you, either. Locally owned, fair trade, single origin, Café Las Flores will be served either via French Press or espresso type drinks, with other local favorite, Reverb Coffee, available for pour over options. They hope that as popularity increases and they become established, to incorporate other coffee experiences such as Turkish and Vietnamese coffee techniques.
While Abby brings her artistry talents to the table, the talents of Heather are displayed in the aesthetics and atmosphere. She has an instinctual artistic appreciation that she says “she feels in her gut”. She enjoys helping expose the emerging outsider artist, that presents an “Avant-garde, contemporary alternative” style about them. You will be inspired when you check out the CooperLoo Gallery, a bathroom with its own address. This “Loo” is its very own art installation, which will be changed out regularly. Tart patrons are encouraged to take a selfie, tag it on Instagram with #tartbathroomselfie and the best photo each month will win a piece of art from the main Tart gallery walls.
Heather and Abby also want to give back to the community by offering a variety of classes, as well as scholarships towards art supplies for grade school students at local area schools. They are working towards being open in a couple of weeks, but are awaiting final inspections to be completed. There is truly something for everyone, and that makes me so excited to see that open sign!
