June is National Great Outdoors Month, and as part of the celebration Shelby Farms Park is hosting the Great American Backyard Campout on June 25 – 26.
Shelby Farms Park Conservancy is a sanctioned site for the Great American Campout, which will be held all over the country as the National Wildlife Federation’s celebration of camping and connecting to nature.
During the campout at Shelby Farms, campers will take part in a number of fun events for the entire family, including the unique opportunity to spend the night in the park.
“It’s a great opportunity for Memphians to reconnect with the great outdoors,” said Rebecca Dailey, development and communications assistant for the park. “It’s a special opportunity for families to experience the park after dark.”
Dailey said the campout is a chance for anyone to experience nature, whether you have kids who have never been camping or who are experienced because there will be activities for all levels.
- When: June 25 – 26. 10 a.m. – 9 a.m.
- Where: Shelby Farms Park
- Cost: $65 per family for park members. $80 per family for non-members. (Includes dinner, breakfast, snacks and activities.)
The campout will start with a fishing rodeo, followed by campfire cooking and outdoor survival activities. In the evening, campers will be taken on a guided nocturnal nature hike where they will have the chance to encounter some of the park’s numerous wildlife that stays hidden during normal hours. Once darkness falls, the Memphis Astronomical Society will bring telescopes for stargazing. In the morning, families will have breakfast with the buffalo and stretch during morning yoga.
